griffin iTrip for 3rd gen hack

Is it possible to hack an iTrip from a 3rd gen iPod to work with a 5g iPod? It looks like all it'd need is a new jack soldered on, as well as an external power source. Would I need to do something with the data wires as well?

I've got both an iTrip for pre-5th Gen ipods and a 3G iPod I use it with. My wife has a 5G iPod and an iTrip Auto. The signal quality of the newer iTrip is vastly improved over what I can get with mine. VASTLY. I really didn't like using mine much, as it's very hard to get it placed somewhere to get a decent signal. The newer one is much better, and I'm assuming that's because it can draw power fromt he 12v socket in the car. Bonus is that it'll charge your iPod while you're using it. They're about $80 new, but we got ours and later one for a brother-in-law on discount at different stores.

That said, there's the remote connector signals on the dock connector, IIRC, so it is feasible. Sacrficing a cable to get the connector, and cracking it open to attach to the proper pins would not be fun. As a matter of fact, I just checked the plug on an Apple USB to Dock Connector cable, and it doesn't even have the pins for anything else in it. Looking into the plug it's very obvious that there are only 4 pins in place, just enough for USB. This may be possible, but it may be more work than just opening the connector and pasting a few wires in.

Ok, I wasn't sure if it'd be easy or even possible, but it was worth asking about. I've got an airplay 2 and it's the biggest piece of crap. The reception is poor and it keeps popping out of the dock connector.
