debian has all the little bugs worked out of it now. i saw different examples or beryl, and have since tried to install it through different gui programs and automatic scripts with the same result. looking at the terminal(and i can post what it says if anyone asks), it shows that half of the urls that it tries to access don't load, so therefore it can't get beryl. it's the exact same result every time. have things since been updated since the packages i have were created?

What version of Debian are you using, and have you enabled extra repositories?
i've actually been able to find the version listing of debian. i'm assuming it's etch since i downloaded it directly off the debian site. right now, i'm trying to figure out how to get a useless address out of my sources.list, since the computer is spending about five minutes trying to load it every time i run updates.
Via GUI menus use Desktop -> Administration -> Software Properties. Otherwise, if you can edit the file directly, though a root account or something, you can comment out the line, by putting a # symbol at the start if it.
that definitely got rid of the pointless url. now, does anyone know of links to beryl install sites that they are sure work properly?
i finally figured out the instructions on the beryl wiki page and have it successfully installed. the only problem i'm having now is that setting the window appearance to beryl crashes x and sends me right back to the login window. i reinstalled to check the code, and that didn't help. the only thing i can think it would be now would be incompatability with my graphics card, but could there be anything else?
It is beta software, so errors should be expected at some point. Your problem may correct itself in the next release of Beryl or the video drivers.
OK, so I installed feisty to muck around with, and by default, it comes with compitz. It worked fine when I first installed feisty, but one of the updates must have broke it. It was only displaying one workspace when enabled, and was not rotating, even after configuring it. So, I uninstalled it, and installed beryl. It works like butta. I have 4 workspaces, and the cube effect works awesome. It is also very customizeable.

I've found that I had to change the number of workspaces back to 4 after enabling compiz a few times. That would, of course, prevent the cube effect from working with only 1 workspace enabled.
i think first thing i'll do is find drivers for my graphics card to see if that does it. if not, i'll wait for a new version of beryl. my pc is a conglomeration of junk parts (lucky me they all work), so there's likely to be something that's in compatible, much like my usb speakers which work on occasion.
yeah, I did that in the config, but the spinning cube, which is what I wanted. my gfx card can't do quartz extreme, so i don't have the pleasure of seeing that when I enable fast user switching in OS X.
