I have an old slow 500mhz G3 iBook (white icebook), and I was wondering if it is possible to put a G4 motherboard in it... Does anyone know?
Its just not going to happen. They are very different beasts, completely different on the inside.
Can you explain how they are different? Do they have a different shape or mounting screws or something? Different LCD connector?

Take your pick: the answer is "yes"
All of the above, and more. They may look similar on the outside, but once you've got them open side by side, it quickly becomes obvious that these are very different beasts.
Well I got ahold of a broken iBook G4 and I managed to cobble a working machine together from my iBook G3 parts... I'm happy with it.
Have any pictures? Thats probably a weird looking machine!
