Increasing USB Power

If I buy a usb extension cable, cut the two power wire off the computer end plug, then connect the other end to a wall wart power dc adaptor (5V 1A), will it increase the number of bus-powered devices i can attach? (also, do i still need to attach the computer power wires (with diodes)).

Sounds like...

Sounds like a good way of freeing the magic smoke. Why not simply buy a powered hub?
