Converting AVI's to MPG's

I did a search for this topic and I was suprised no one had asked this yet.

I am trying to convert AVI (required DivX to work in Quicktime) to the standard good ole MPG format.

I say stnadard MPG because I have found that Quicktime will export to many file formats, but the closest that seems to come to the MPG format (that many devices use) is MP4.

So what is the best way to accomplish this? I would like it if Quicktime could do this since it seems to do things quickly, but then you have to buy a bunch of modules to get it to do basic things.

re: Converting AVI's to MPG's

to MPG's what? Or do you really mean MPGs? Without the apostrophe? As in plural.

Right then.

How do you intend to use the resulting file? Play it on a DVD player? Many DVD players nowadays can play divx encoded files.

Do you only need to play it on a computer? Instead of QT Player, use the excellent, amazing and totally free VLC to play back all your videos on computers.

Need conversion tips

Thanks for replying. I have devices and computer media players that will play .avi files as they are. What I'm needing are suggestions for media converters so that I can play them on a DVD player that can read video CD/DVD discs. This player likes MPG files prior to MP4 and some of the newer formats.

Thanks for your input.

ffmpegX

The open source ffmpegX looks like it'll do conversions-a-plenty.

I did a search for this topic and I was surprised no one had asked this yet.

We've had tons of threads on video conversion. Problem is, 99.9% of them have been from spammers and written in pidgin english that reads like a cross between Yoda and lolcats. powerful converter it is! where I can buys?

LOL! Yeh I came across some of those in my google search. Pissed me off because I was looking for Macintosh based editors and they always pointed to PC based ones. :/

But yeh ffMpegX is VERY poswerful. So powerful that I am not sure which of the options would end up with the good ole standard mpeg. In other words, too much information for this novice movie converter. Any idea which option I would select on that one?

Handbrake now converts

Try HandBrake
It should convert that. I used it to rip audio out of an AVI File, so go ahead and give it a try!
