is there a way to create an apple script in OS 9 to select a user and automatically login to that account?

AFAIK, you can't run scripts without already being logged in.
If you just use a single account, set the Multiple Users control panel to off, and that shuts off the login window.
...it was a silly feature for OS 9, anyway...
