This should be easy but it's turning out to be frustrating - I bought a SCSI CDROM in a external case on eBay which was indicated to be working on a SE/30 prior to sale. It included a DB25 to 50 pin cable which I plugged into my Mac Color Classic OS7.1 Enabler 401. The drive isn't being seen by my Mac, so I dug into the manuals, and realized I probably needed a terminator on the SCSI bus. Got one, no difference. Changed SCSI IDs from 6 to 5, no difference.
Is there some sort of system file I need to change to get the Mac to see the CDROM?
First try SCSI Probe a/o TattleTech (it's now freeware) to make sure the Mac sees the drive on the SCSI chain.
If so, reinstall the System Software or do a custom install of just the CD drivers. If it's not an "Apple ROM'd CD you may need second party drivers like CD-ROM Toolkit from FWB. A quick test might be to boot from the Disk Tools floppy and see if the drive will mount a System installer CD.
You might want to crack the case to make sure the SCSI ID SwitchBlock connector is attatched if it was shipped. You don't need to do that if SCSI Probe or TT reports it at different IDs when you change them tho.
That's all I can think of offhand.
Thanks jt, I'm working on getting Tattletech down to my Mac (file xfer from PC, having problems getting HQX files to come down and not give CRC errors) and will see if it sees the SCSI drive.
I had a peek at the floppies that came with this machine and didn't see any option to install CD drivers, just various options for installing the OS on different machines, Appletalk, printers etc. Would I be better off getting a 7.5.5 install CD and boot disk and updating 7.1? I was thinking of doing that anyway since it would appear that the network card in the Color Classic (that I haven't even tried yet LOL) is better supported in the later version...
. . . never even seen one. You'll need to ask folks who belong in this forum about OS levels, or check out the FAQ, I'll bet you'll find info in there! I've never really used 7.1, now that I think about it. IIRC, it came installed on the 630 I bought new back in the day, but I upgraded to 7.5 fairly soon after the first bugfix updater CD shipped.
Peripherals I've had a lil' experience with though!
