Is there an emergency eject h

Is there an emergency eject hole? I'd poke in there with a straightened paper-clip to see if the mechanism would move. How could there be a cd in the way, is it a slot load type or something? Maybe not your idea of fun; but you could open the imac, remove the drive, open it, move the parts free, and put it all back together again. Sucks to do, but I did once and bought years for a friend's drive.

My BlueBerry had a similar problem. The magnetic retainer ring had come dislodged before I bought it and was one of the many problems with it. It took me a few tries to figure out how it was supposed to go back together. It's been long enough ago that I don't remember how it went, but there was something about under or over the spring clip things... ??

Dead Optical Drive

I just fixed an iMac that did the same thing; pop a CD in and it wouldn't read it at all. The System Profiler didn't even show that the drive was there. I ended up replacing it.

The dead drive was a CD-RW, but the slot-load CD-RW's cost lots (US $150+), so the owner went with a CD-ROM and will likely buy an external burner later.

I got the replacement drive from a guy who advertises pretty regularly on the Low End Mac Swap List -- aaron_daniel at mac dot com -- when I bought from him I think he had two or three others available for sale. He's in Cupertino, CA.
