Duo230 and OSX connectivity

I have a Duo 230 in a DuoDock equipped with an Asante Fast 10/100 NuBus Ethernet card.

I would like to get my duo up and running again but I would like to integrate it into my OSX network (an iBook and an eMac).

Which OS should I install in the duo and where can I find drivers for my Asante? Also which extension would I need to accomplish this. Then there is the OSX (Tiger) question.

How can I connect. Can I connect from the duo or should it be done from the OSX machines?

Really kind of lost for info. Maybe OSX needs something installed? I am not sure but I sure would love to get some feedback. Any help would be appreciated.

Mac TV and OSX connectivity help needed.

I am lost, as well, connecting a 68K Mac to an eMac running Tiger.

The Asante bridge which I got from eeun through this forum says to connect ethernet to one of its ports (from my eMac) and a LocalTalk device (the Mac TV System 7.1) to its miniDIN-8 port.

I've got file sharing set up correctly on the Mac TV, I think, but can't get the two machines to talk. It's likley that I don't know how to configure the OSX networking for this purpose, though I spent some hours trying this morning. I could go to System 7.5.3 on the old machine if that would help.

Any advice would be most appreciated and I will keep an eye on this thread as comments for alexsantos and his Duo 230 connectivity troubles may aid me as well.

On another topic, I too have a Duo 230 but it won't boo; flashes the disk question mark. Unfortunately, I don't have the dock for it and don't know how to re-install the system if its corrupted. Any thoughts on where I can get the dock and whether its worth the effort to get this one up and running again if the hard disk is toast? I really liked that machine.

Asanté's output has been redirected to (ethernet) switches rather than NICs after its merger with another company (E=MC). The Asanté forums are still available for your questions at http://www.asante.com/forums/default.asp, but, a moment ago, the downloads did not seem also to be still available at http://techinfo.asante.com/su_sw_int.htm. I suspect that you will need to find or to download Asanté's EtherTalk Installer 5.6.1 for your card.

Inevitably the Duo, and therefore the dock, is running one or another of 7.1-7.5.1, 7.5.3-7.6.1. Given the EtherTalk and Open Transport 1.1.2 installation on the Duo, and TCP/IP configured, and then System Preferences::Sharing and ::Network configured on the OS X machines already in the LAN-of-two, there should be no reason why the Duo can't join them in a LAN-of three through Chooser, in the usual manner. I suggest, because the OS X machines are more intractable in this regard, that you use your OS X Short Name universally in the LAN when setting the Registered User.

Alexsantos; I found an Asant

Alexsantos;
I found an Asante Fast driver here:
http://www.asante.com/support/incLegacyDownloads/level2/10100NuBus.asp

There is a thread on the card here:
http://www.asante.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=2962

pdb;
Is your ethernet cable going from the eMac into the localtalk bridge? If so, make sure you're using a crossover cable, not a regular ethernet cable. When testing, I had a hub between the bridge and the server I connected to, so I don't know if there are any additional caveats for using a crossover cable with the Asante bridge.

Since the bridge will be doing all the work, your old Mac should be quite fine running 7.1.

Re: Duo230 and OSX connectivity

a walk around, by adding a third computer

duo230 + minidock

local talk to a power macintosh 6500 (for example)
ethernet from the 6500 to a G3, G4, G5 with mac os X

Make sure the keyboard works

Make sure the keyboard works first... Wink

There was a page on connection a system 6 mac to an OS X fileserver, its information should work for the duo. Mine does not have ethernet, and I still need to fix a broken connection on the keyboard (finally everything but the spacebar works). Drivers...not sure. If you need to, you could just pick up a better-supported 10bt nubus card, considering the duo probably cannot handle 100bt anyways.

Don't bother with a localtalk

Don't bother with a localtalk-ethernet box. That's just silly.

Plug your 10/100 card into the network.

Install System 7.5.5 per my article: http://www.fenestrated.net/~macman/755/

Skip QuickTime 4 and MRJ to keep the RAM footprint down.

Now you can just set up TCP/IP and connect to your Tiger machine easily by typing its IP address right into the chooser.

Simple!

P.S. I hear tell that the 10/100 card you're using is pretty finicky. A Duo 230 will never be able to saturate a 100Megabit ethernet interface anyway, so I'd just use the Dock's built-in ethernet (if you have a Dock Plus) or a regular 10MBPS NuBus card (I have one to give away if you want to pay for shipping).

It's pdb who's got the localtalk-ethernet box issues, not alexsantos, and pdb's Mac already has something in the pds slot - so no ethernet.

That's worth knowing. Alexsantos, do you have a different nubus ethernet card you can try? If not, they're a dime a dozen, and I'm sure someone here (including myself) could send you one for cost of postage.

I'd try

I think of the Duo as somewhere between the LCII and the LC5xx, so though not specifically supported, I'd at least try NetBSD... the possibility of turning it into a real work horse is just too tempting.... think of it, a Duo ftp/web server
http://netbsd.org/Ports/mac68k/

seems to be a lot of interest in the port, at least
(link not working... try googling NetBSD Duo)
