Mis-identified SonnetTech L2 G3 on ebay

I would usually refrain from posting an odd-ball eBay item listing like this but it looks like this seller is selling a 512k/1MB L2 cache stick as a Sonnet Tech G3 L2. Maybe they are mis-informed. I'm not trying to bash 'em.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5837367953

I've yet to se a SonnetTech L2 card w/out the purple heatsink (it should be on the side that is shown in the pict I believe) let alone an "SDT" branded label sticker on it.

The seller looks like one of those orgs that sells other peoples stuff. I could be wrong. I'm guessing the original owner of the L2 G3 put the cache stick that WAS in their machine when they upgraded into the Sonnet box and now it's being resold as the G3 by mistake. I'd just hate being the one who buy's this and finds out that it's NOT the G3 card I thought I was bidding on.

To moderator: If this was an inappropriate post, let me know please. Smile

Hmm...

Sad. There are people bidding on it too. I wonder how high it will go.

emailed 'em

Yeah, I emailed them to make sure it has the purple heatsink. Haven't heard back yet but then again if they're a full fledge business they may not check it until tomorrow (monday).

If it is in error, I can only speculate how much stuff is sold like this on eBay by mis-informed or unexperienced sellers. *shrugs*

Oh well, did my part. Smile

Not even 512k

It's an Integrated Device Technology 256KB L2 Cache. I've got the exact same card sitting right here in my hand. I don't remember what I pulled it out of, maybe a 6500 or a Powercomputing clone. Definitely not a Sonnet G3. I'm betting what happened is that when someone removed it from their computer to replace it with the L2 G3, they put this card back in the Sonnet box and the seller picked up the box somehow and didn't know the difference.

It's all good.

Thanks Hawaii and guys, I'm going to pass the correct info along to them.

The seller responded to my initial inquiry...

"Dear Sir,

Thank you so much for the correct information on this item! This is a consigned item and the owner did not state that it did not go with this particular box. I really do appreciate the info and will pull the auction off so that it may be relisted again, but this time with the accurate information. I'm so glad you know about this!

Smiles from Texas,

Bea @ orbitdrop.tx001"

That's good work, DK. You've saved both the buyer and seller a lot of grief.

I see it's not gone yet too.

Thanks. I just hate to see someone get inadvertently burned on an auction. Here was my reply to their email...

"Not a problem. I got some more specific info for you from someone on Apple Fritter.com that has the exact card...

The Card itself is an Integrated Device Technology 256KB L2 Cache. He doesn't remember if it was pulled form a PowerMac 6500 or a Power Computing clone.

If I may suggest, sell the card and box seperately.

You'll maybe get $3-5 for the card with $4 shipping.

If the box is complete with manuals and installer floppy you may get about the same. Also note in the auction what speed the boxs' card is for. That info should be somewhere on its side like 'PPCG3 300/1MB' or something like that. If someone has that card to potentially sell on ebay they might buy the box to help up their price on their now complete G3 upgrade w/ box if they purchase the box from you.

I can't tell you how much the box/manuals would go for. Maybe $5-$10 depending how complete it is. Some included a 'Power By SonnetTech' decal."

I'm keeping my eye on the auction. I'm currious to see how it goes. Smile
