Preparing a number of Apple-related (mostly Apple II) auctions on eBay

I'm afraid I have to sell my Apple II collection in preparation for a downsizing move. It's painful to see it go, but I want to make sure it ends up in good hands.

I have NO idea what to price these things at, as the auctions are all over the place. My eBay username is jsa_sf, so if you follow me, you'll see how I post them. I have no interest in a reserve, though I'm likely to lose value given how obsessed I was collecting them in the first place.

Some of the machines are more "parts" oriented, particularly the //e's. There are some rare-ish ones in there though, but nothing that will blow minds like Rev 0's or prototypes.

If something seems inappropriate, or you discover something I got wrong in my research of the machines, feel free to message me during this process. I am totally unfamilliar with the world of eBay selling and I'm likely to screw something up!

I will post them as they list. I believe there are 19 total machines, plus monitors, disk drives, and interface cards. Everything has been photographed, tested where possible (I'm not plugging in a Europlus or J-Plus or "unused"), and properly packaged. Computers have been wrapped in anti-static bubble wrap and then crated in a new Uline box, then that box wrapped in anti-static bubble wrap and then that crated in a larger box. Cards are going out in anti-static foam box shippers. If something is still in it's original box, or part of a kit, that box has been crated in another box, etc. You know the drill.

Anyway, stay tuned.

First listing: Apple II A2M001

Here is the first listing, an original (rev 4) Apple II A2M001.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/256029498670

This is a copy of the condition details in the item description:

Condition

This specific computer is part of my personal collection which I put together over a decade ago and has remained untouched and protected since I acquired it. This Apple II board came off the line around July 22, 1979, at the end of the fabrication run just before the Apple II+ began appearing approximately a month later. Based on general timing estimates it looks to be a Rev 4 motherboard.

The machine has not been fully tested, but the power light does turn on when power is applied, and the screen shows the garbage characters (though the board fabrication date indicates a Rev 4). This implies that the power supply is in reasonable shape, but there may be a problem, likely due to age or a failing chip, that needs to be identified on the board to restore to full functionality. (Note: We did not try the reset technique used on Rev 0 boards.)

Please inspect the photos carefully.  This computer is a 44-year-old, used piece of equipment. Expect scratches, scrapes, sticker residue, dings or scuffs. I've attempted to note any major defects; however, I could miss things.

This item is sold AS IS.

Extras

This listing includes the instruction manual and an Apple Disk ][ Interface Card for connecting disk drives to the computer. This computer does not come with other accessories (cables, etc).

Here is the Europlus link:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/256029819952

Here is the item description:

Vintage Apple II Europlus Computer, Model IA2S2016 Revision 824-0044-01 Apple II Plus

#1A2S2-681980 (3/21/82)Model: A2S1016Serial Number: A2S1-32844Manufacture Week/Year: 23/81 (May/June, 1981)Board Revision: 824-0044-01

Condition

This computer is in excellent condition for its age. It has not been tested due to the different voltage requirement for the European power supply. It shows signs of being used and general wear and tear.

This Apple II+ motherboard came off the line around May 31, 1981. The motherboard is a revision 824-0044-01.

Please inspect the photos carefully.  This computer is a 42-year-old, used piece of equipment. Expect scratches, scrapes, sticker residue, dings or scuffs. I've attempted to note any major defects; however, I could miss things.

Next listing: Apple PersonalModem 300/1200, Unopened

This is an unopened, sealed in box Apple PersonalModem 300/1200. Not that exciting, perhaps... but kind of crazy that it's still shrink wrapped and untouched.

Here is the link:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/256030024375

This is the item description:

Vintage, Unopened Apple PersonalModem 300/1200, In Box Sealed Since 1987

This is an Apple PersonalModem 300/1200 still in its original box, sealed. It's never been used. My guess is that my friend's dad was sold this as part of a purchase of Macintosh equipment in the late 80's and he had no use for a modem. When my friend found it in his dad's things, he thought of me and gifted it to me.

Please inspect the photos carefully.  This item is an over 30 years old, used piece of equipment. Expect scratches, scrapes, sticker residue, dings or scuffs. I've attempted to note any major defects; however, I could miss things.

This item is sold AS IS.

With new listings, should I...

Should I post new listings as separate topics or just responses in this one?

I figured with the multitude of listings I'm putting up this month it might be less noisy in a single thread, but curious what people think.

Next up: PC Transporter

Next up is an Applied Engineering PC Transporter with ColorSwitch and UniDrive.

Here is the link:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/256030056597

Here is the description:

Applied Engineering PC Transporter, Allows Apple II to run/access PC/MS-DOS

I actually had one of these in my Apple IIGS in the late 80's and early 90's. Here's my description:

AE was the leading company creating after-market expansion cards for the Apple II computer line. At the time, the number one competitor to Apple on the home computer market was IBM, who made a computer called the IBM PC/XT.

AE's solution was simple: Why not have both? The PC Transporter had it's own CPU and could run three times faster than an IBM PC/XT. It was fully expandable and even allowed the installation of a math co-processor.

This description is from the Applied Engineering archives site:

PC Transporter lets an Apple II run MS-DOS programs three times faster than an IBM PC/XT with an Intel 8088-compatible NEC V20.  Running in the IBM mode, PC Transporter provides up to 640K of user RAM and 128K of system RAM.  Up to 768K of extra RAM is available for Apple programs.  It also accepts an optional 8087-2 Math co-processor chip and a lot of other AE accessories.  Compatible with II+, IIe, and IIgs.

Condition

This PC Transporter is in good cosmetic shape and comes with all the original accessories, including the Transdrive, a 3.5" MS-DOS-compatible drive, and optional ColorSwitch which allows an Apple IIGS to switch between IBM and Apple video out to the AppleColor RGB Monitor.

The device is untested.

Please inspect the photos carefully.  This device is over 35 years old and a used piece of equipment. Expect scratches, scrapes, sticker residue, dings or scuffs. I've attempted to note any major defects; however, I could miss things.

This item is sold AS IS.

We modified it as kids to include a volume control.

Here is the link:

Condition

This specific computer belonged to my friend's family in Michigan when we were kids. We modified the computer at the time to include a potentiometer on the right side of the case to control the volume so our parents couldn't hear us play games late at night.

This Apple II+ motherboard came off the line around March 21, 1982. The motherboard is a revision 824-0044-D.

This machine has not been tested. It was last used by us as kids in high school.

Please inspect the photos carefully.  This computer is a 41-year-old, used piece of equipment. Expect scratches, scrapes, sticker residue, dings or scuffs. Please note the added potentiometer (volume control) on the right side of the case. I've attempted to note any major defects; however, I could miss things.

This bit of history is the Bell & Howell variation of Apple Computer's first popular Apple II computer, the Apple II+. It includes the elusive "backpack" for AV connections.

Condition

This B&H Apple II+ shows signs of wear and tear and was definitely in heavy use at a school. It has not been tested, as it doesn't power up, probably due to the added fuse in the backpack being blown or a similar power supply issue. The edge/cable management part of the left rear side of the backpack is cracked, likely repaired at some point in it's life.

This Apple II+ motherboard came off the line around September 13, 1981. The motherboard is a revision 824-0044-C.

Please inspect the photos carefully.  This computer is an over 42 years old, used piece of equipment. Expect scratches, scrapes, sticker residue, dings or scuffs. I've attempted to note any major defects; however, I could miss things.

This computer is in great condition, but it has no power supply. It has been tested by temporarily installing another unit's power supply and booted with a 3.25" floppy disk drive and AppleColor RGB display. It shows some signs of being used and general wear and tear, but otherwise is cosmetically in good condition.

The unit comes with keyboard, keyboard cable, power cable, and memory expansion card.

I figured with the multitude of listings I'm putting up this month it might be less noisy in a single thread, but curious what people think.

Frankly, I came back to this thread specifically to see what new thing

I agree, this topic seems great given the volume and quality of the items. Best of luck OP, I have to admit the AppleColor monitor is tempting :)

There are actually two AppleColor RGB Monitors in the listings. One is part of a complete Woz IIGS Set with a certificate and all the fixings. I'm keeping the one I repaired myself though, they are fairly easy to tune up and fix brightness and focus with a cap set...but they are heavy and take up so much space!

I haven't checked in a while, but I assume by now there are after market cards that let you hook in an HDMI modern display, right? I'd love that as a setup!

When it comes to the IIGS, I

When it comes to the IIGS, I use a SCART cable and quality upsclaer of my choice. A Retrotink usually does the job quite well.

My Apple IIe I was lucky enough to get an A2Analog VGA card for. That thing is glorious, I hope they are able to make a lot of them.

Next Up: Still in Box Apple II+, Unused?

Link to item:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/256029565932

Ok there's a fair bit of story around this Apple II+ I acquired, supposedly found in a warehouse in Ireland, still in its box.

First off:

I doubt highly that's the case. I'm not saying it's not a special Apple, I love it, and it certainly appears super unused and mint condition. However, call me a skeptic, you can buy boxes that are empty out there.

If you inspect it carefully, I think you would agree, it's likely never been really used. However, it's not "new in box" and there is no wrapping plastic. The manuals and cables came separately, and clearly the box had been opened before.

Regardless, this is one of my favorites! Here is the description:

Apple II Plus (Apple II+) Computer In Original Box, Model A2S1048 Revision 824-0044-D With GE Cassette Player,

Serial #418426 (4/4/82)

  • Model: A2S1048

  • Serial Number: A2S1-418426

  • Manufacture Week/Year: 15/82 (April, 1982)

  • Board Revision: 824-0044-D

  •

This bit of history is Apple Computer's first revision of the popular Apple II computer, the Apple II+.

Condition

Please inspect the photos carefully.

Untested, this computer is in beautiful, excellent collector condition. It was sold to me described as unused approximately ten years ago. I do not claim this machine was in an unopened state, as I have no way to confirm that with my research. There is no way to verify that it never has been powered up by previous owners.

For example, the serial number on the case does not match the hand-written serial number on the box. It is unclear why these are different, or if they are supposed to be. Also, there is no plastic wrap around the machine, which I believe originals were shipped in.

This being said, it appears untouched and certainly unused! The memory sticker is still on the spacebar, there are no signs of wear and tear, and no signs of chaffing around the interface slots. The box had clearly already been opened for displaying items by a previous owner, and when I received it the manuals and cassette recorder were in a separate box, but the machine has never been powered up or tested. It is truly a beautiful example of later revisions of the Apple II+

To reiterate: It has  not been powered up or tested

This Apple II+ motherboard came off the line around April 4, 1982. The box date says August, 1982. The motherboard is a revision 824-0044-D.

Again, please inspect the photos carefully.  This computer is an over 40 years old, used piece of equipment. Expect scratches, scrapes, sticker residue, dings or scuffs. I've attempted to note any major defects; however, I could miss things.

This item is sold AS IS.

Extras

Included with the computer is an instruction manual, a General Electric Cassette Recorder used prior to the use of floppy disk drives, and instruction manual for the cassette recorder. Also included in a power cable.

Shipping

As this is a vintage computer, extra care has been taken in preparation for shipping. The shipping costs will be calculated automatically based on the location of the buyer. Local pickup in the Bay Area, California is welcome, but must happen within 14 days of the completed purchase. This item is well packaged for shipment in a single crate: Original Apple box is wrapped carefully in anti-static bubble wrap. Manuals, GE cassette player and power cable are also wrapped. All of these wrapped items enclosed in a second new, 24" x 20" x 31" cardboard box. All shipments are sent via FedEx or UPS Ground for domestic and eBay International Shipping for international locations.

Next Up: IIc Flat Panel Display

Next up is an Apple IIc Flat Panel Display.

Link to item:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/256033064965

Description:

Rare, Vintage Apple IIc Flat Panel Display (A2M4022), 1984

Serial Number: L4C3134

The Apple IIc Flat Panel Display is a 7-inch monochrome, LCD display introduce by Apple for the Apple IIc in 1984. It is designed to be mounted to the top of a IIc to make the machine more portable. Since the IIc didn't have a battery, and wasn't truly portable, it was generally thought of as a more expensive and less useful option than the Monitor IIc, a compact version of the Monitor III.

Condition

This is a rare Apple IIc Flat Panel Display. It is UNTESTED and unlikely to function, as most of these displays in circulation are non-functional. The plastic is yellowed in areas due to age. The screen shows scratch marks. The item shows general wear-and-tear, but is in good cosmetic shape.

Please inspect the photos carefully.  This display is over 35 years old. It is a used piece of equipment. Expect scratches, scrapes, sticker residue, dings or scuffs. I've attempted to note any major defects; however, I could miss things.

Woz IIgs is a Rom 00?
jsa wrote:

Next up is a Woz LE without a power supply...

Hi jsa,

Great collection for sale!

A query regarding the Woz IIgs ... it looks like from the photos that it might actually be a ROM 00 (not ROM 01)? I.e. the ROM pictured I think is a 342-0077-A  28pin. Whereas I think ROM 01 would be a  342-0077-B or later with more pins?  ... if I recall correctly.

Cheers,

Sylvain

Corrected ROM 00 GS Listing

 Here is the new listing:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/256037389788

I couldn't sell it in good faith without updating it properly. Here is the new description:

Vintage Apple IIGS Computer (A2S6000) ROM 00 (January, 1987), No Power Supply

Serial Number: A2S2-E7045CKA2S6000 (1/11/1987)

  • Model: A2S6000

  • Serial Number: A2S2-E7045CKA2S6000

  • Manufacture Year/Week: 87/03 (January, 1987)

  • Board Revision: ROM 00

This is Apple Computer's fourth revision of the popular Apple II computer, the Apple IIGS. This Woz Limited Edition, ROM 00 includes an Apple Computer Memory Expansion Card, keyboard, keyboard cable, and power cable (in a bag inside case).

History of the Apple IIGS

The Apple IIGS (sometimes stylized as Apple //gs or apple 2gs) is a 16-bit personal computer launched in September, 1986, known for it's ease of use and expandability, offering some improvements over its predecessors, the 8-bit Apple IIe and Apple IIc. Some of the numerous improvements included a new 65C816 16 bit CPU, an onboard Ensoniq wavetable synthesis chip, and a color graphical user interface (GUI) six months prior to the Macintosh line getting color support.

The GS stood for Graphics and Sound, and it lived up to its name, offering beautiful, hi resolution color graphics for its time. It shipped with a mouse, and for many Apple II users represented the first point-and-click GUI they experienced. The European demo scene pushed downloadable sound and graphic demos into entirely new horizons, taking advantage of 32 simultaneous channels of digital sound.

The first 50,000 units were sold as "Woz Limited Edition," commemorating Apple Computer's inventor, Steve Wozniak. Each had a screen printed Woz signature on the front of the case. If the owner mailed in a registration card, they would receive a certificate signed by Woz and the team. This edition existed regardless of the ROM version, which for the first year was ROM 00, then after some fixes the ROM 01 was released in August, 1987. In August 1989, the ROM 03 was released, which increased onboard RAM and made numerous bug fixes and efficiency improvements.

Please note that this machine is an early, first year ROM 00 machine. To quote Paul Good's post to the apple2.org.za mailing list:

> The main difference is that ROM 01 has newer versions of the low-level
toolsets (version 2.0 of toolsets 1 through 13, instead of version 1.0),
incorporating a lot of bug fixes.  The majority of these are also fixed
on a ROM 00 machine by running new enough system software (System 2.0 or
later), because the system software loads the patches into RAM at
startup time.
If you are running old system software, the main benefit of ROM 01 is
that it will free up some RAM that would otherwise be occupied by these
patches, and the same bugs are fixed if you run System 1.0 or 1.1 on a
ROM 01.
There is a technical note (TN.IIGS.026) which summarises the changes in
ROM 01 (which it confusingly calls "ROM 2.0").  Apart from toolbox
changes, the other significant ones I can spot from a quick glance
include:
>
- Detection of disk changes in the Apple 3.5 Drive works correctly.
- AppleTalk bug fixes.
- Applesoft handles horizontal tabbing correctly in 80-column mode.
- Maximum RAM disk size increased to almost 8 MB (instead of 4 MB).
- Interrupt handler bug fixes.
- New monitor command (#) to enable some debugging desk accessories.
- New monitor command (Ctrl-N) to set native mode.
- Serial firmware bug fixes and improvements.
- SmartPort (slot 5) firmware has some bug fixes and better performance.
The most significant difference between ROM 00 and 01 is the fact that
System 4.0 and later (all system software based on GS/OS) will not run
on ROM 00 - it requires ROM 01 (or ROM 3, which has a different
motherboard).
You may run into some old software which only works on ROM 00, because
the software broke the rules about how to use the firmware, or relied on
old bugs which were fixed.

Origins and Innovations

Steve Wozniak invented the Apple II, which was an important innovation to provide an all-in-one personal computer solution using very little chip real estate required compared to other computers of the time. The innovations included the first personal computer capable of color display, the use of a lightweight, switching power supply, an integrated keyboard, and a full set of expansion slots allowing you to upgrade memory, tape and disk storage devices, and other peripherals like modems and printers.

In 1976, Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple Computer, asked Jerry Manock to come up with the famous beige case of the Apple II, which became known for being the first to hide the complexity of the interior for home use. Prior to the Apple II, computers often came in assembly kits designed for electronics hobbyists (as was true with the Apple 1).

Steve also asked Rod Holt to design the switching power supply, an innovation only previously used by calculators or Xerox's Alto computer, making the Apple II very lightweight and would generate far less heat.

These changes, along with the multitude of other innovations, led to Apple effectively creating the personal computer market. Many historians credit the Apple II as being the first consumer, commercially viable computer of all time.

Condition
This is an early, ROM 00 model of the Apple IIGS. This computer is in great condition, but it has no power supply. It has been tested by temporarily installing another unit's power supply and booted with a 5.25" floppy disk drive and AppleColor RGB display, into ProDOS and DOS 3.3. It shows some signs of being used and general wear and tear, but otherwise is cosmetically in good condition.

The unit comes with keyboard, keyboard cable, power cable, and memory expansion card.

Please inspect the photos carefully.  This computer is over 30 years old. It is a used piece of equipment. Expect scratches, scrapes, sticker residue, dings or scuffs. I've attempted to note any major defects; however, I could miss things.

This item is sold AS IS.

No worries!

Hoping to bid on a few items ... I'm only just getting back into the Apple ii ecosystem after finding my original Apple IIc in my parents attic. Still works! ... going to set it up for my young kids as an intro into computing. :)

Next Up: Novation AppleCat II

This was my pride and joy as a teenager. The Novation Apple Cat II!! Not your run-of-the-mill internal modem.

Link to listing:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/256033158041

Description:

Vintage Novation AppleCat II 300/1200 Baud Modem for Apple II - 1983, Untested

In the early 80s, the Novation AppleCat II was extremely popular for Apple II owners who dabbled in downloading software and "phone phreaking." Phreaking was the art of taking control of the phone line to avoid long distance charges and create conference calls, which was particularly important when you're dialing up up BBS systems over a long distance phone call!

The AppleCat had an on-board digital signal processor, and was capable of producing (directly onto the phone line) tones of various frequencies, especially the famous 2600Hz tone used by phone phreakers to take control of an operator trunk and send commands to the local telephone switch in the central office.

Additionally, the AppleCat could do file transfers using 1200 baud half-duplex (one direction), which reduced the time to download large files by four times!

Condition

This vintage Novation AppleCat II modem looks to be in fair condition, though it has some cosmetic damage on the communications module. It is untested.

Please inspect the photos carefully.  This card is almost 40 years old. It is a used piece of equipment. Expect scratches, scrapes, sticker residue, dings or scuffs. I've attempted to note any major defects; however, I could miss things.

This item is sold AS IS.

Shipping

1980 is not correct for this card.  the "Apple I/O Controller Card, Model 655-0101-B" was at least 1983 or so, because it didn't come out until the Duodisk and Unidisk 5.25 drives with the DB19 came out.  That was after the //e.  Early //e units all were sold with the older Disk ][ Controller Card and Disk ][ drives.

This beauty works perfectly. I knew people would ask me prior to packing all this stuff up so I made sure it was fully operational. I'm not sure why I had so much trouble getting it.

eBay Restriction

eBay sent me a message this morning saying my account has been restricted for review, because they saw an account that was dormant suddently lists tons of things and it triggered a risk and verification hold.

They say they apologize for this but the existing bidding periods are gone, and existing bids are gone, while they verify I'm a real human being.

This is insane.

eBay Fun

I spoke with them extensively. The finally got me a message that had an actual upload llnk for my drivers license, passport, proof of bank account, proof of residence, etc. However, they also asked for invoices for all my Apples from when I purchased them.

I asked, how on earth am I supposed to provide invoices for items I've owned for decades, most of which I bought on eBay?

So now I wait to see what they do. I don't want to re-list anything until I have assurances I won't get shut down again. It's a huge amount of work to properly schedule all the listings. The scheduled ones are still visible to me, but the active ones are "hidden" until this restriction is removed, then they will. need to be relisted again.

Remind me why there is no competition for eBay?
