Apple //e keyboard board compatibility

I am having  trouble with keys on my apple //e and tried to swap a friend's keyboard from another apple //e and was surprised to see every single key being repeated constantly until I press another one. All keys do this. What could this be? Are those boards not all cross compatible? Thanks!

This usually happens if one

They are cross compatible. This usually happens if one of the keys is shorted pressed. (You get the same effect if you simply hold down one of the keys.)

You can easily find out which one by pressing each key one at a time. The shorted one is the one that does not produce a change in the repeating character.

Thanks CVT, the problem

Thanks CVT, the problem resolved itself after leaving it over night, your description makes sense and I wonder if a bit of moisture got into one of the keys and naturally subsided. Thanks!

Regular usage keeps the keys

Regular usage keeps the keys reliable.

Storage and non-use are the enemy of these key switches.
