resetting odometer illegal?

I will soon be getting my first car, a '78 242 volvo. The car is in good shape, exept the odometer is not working. I grabed a dash from a 260 at the junkyard. Got lucky; all of the gears in the speedomiter/ odometer look good. Now when I get my car, I can replace the gears and hopefully have a working odometer. Anyhoo, I when I have the thing dissasembled, I would like to reset the thing so that it recordes "my" miles on the car (kinda like having a new car, but uh, not). Now, I have glanced at the dmv's odometer fraud pages to see if this is illegal , but they seem to be about selling a car with less miles then are relly on the car. I never plan to sell this car, hell, I wouldn't let anyone else drive in it, so it's not illegal, right? The car has some 200,000 miles on it, but the odometer has 60,000 (hey, a good selling point! Just don't tell anyone it hasn't moved in 15 years! Acute ). Anyone know if it is illegal to reset an odometer even if you are not selling the car? I gess I could just leve it at 60,000 and let it go from there, but seeing it pass it's first mile would be very cool. Smile
Any and all info appreciated. Thanks!

PS: Spellcheck doesn't work, sorry for any errors

If you reset it you must docu

If you reset it you must document that, and if you ever sell the car you have to state clearly on the papers that the original one was replaced and reset, and mark the original mileage and then whatever is currently used.

So, it's not illegal per say, but you have to cover your back and document it. Like for example, for insurance purposes you need to document and state the odometer has been replaced/reset. Otherwise you can get nailed.

good!

Good! I can reset it! But how do I document it? Is there a dmv form I need to fill out? Or is it something on the title?

Check with officials

Before you do anything to the new odometer, I'd recommend checking with the local DMV, or whatever similar flavour of vehicle licensing bureau exists in your area.

I'm guessing that they'd prefer to note the new mileage rather than have the new odometer rolled to match the old one. They may even have an existing form for the process.

Better to check with official channels now, than find out the hard way later.
