I recently brought my first MAC and it is an iMAC 233 Rev A. It had 8.5 OS installed on it. I also brought OS X and tried to install without installing the lastest firmware. Now all I get is the power indictation and boot up chime but nothing on the monitor. Is there a way to reset the system? How do I get the monitor back? :?

Do you have an os 9 cd? It needs to be installed before you can install the firmware update. Might have to pull the hard drive as well. I've never gone straight to X from 8.
Only have OS X cds. I had to order original cds last night. 8.1 and will go from there. Thanks for the help.

I don't think that the Rev. A-D iMacs needed a firmware update for OS X. My best guess is that you tried to install OS X without enough RAM, and now it just won't boot to the point where the screen comes on. Reinstall a classic OS, then upgrade the RAM, and then if you're really brave and patient, install OS X. But be prepared for it to be very SLOW.
It will run X okay, with enough ram. Just replaced an analogue video board in one last week running 10.2.8
It is a problem with rev A-D iMacs, they need a firmware update for Mac OS X to recognize the screen, but the Mac OS X installer doesn't check.
The mac will boot correctly, but with no video.
If you can install OS 8 or 9 back on it, you can update the firmware and then Mac OS X will work correctly.
I have used OSX (from 10.1 to 10.3) on a Rev A iMac with first 160 and then 384 MB of RAM, and it wasn't that slow (well, 10.1 with 160 MB was, but the others were perfectly usable)
