Duo 2300c and ethernet connection...

Would anybody be kind enough to fill me in on compatable ethernet devices for the above with a mini-dock. I've tried the Asante EN/SC micro(with the HDI-30 connector)and the Farallon AAUI with an adapter, both of which are unsupported.

Am I right in thinking that the E-machine minidock and the Newer ethernet microdock are the only options? And does anybody have a source? eBay has been a barren ground so far.

manythanks...andybloom

Re: Duo 2300c and ethernet...

Your only real options for ethernet are getting your hands on one of the following:

* NewerTech UltraDock 16sce (the 'e' signifies ethernet)
* Asante Ethernet Microdock
* Newer Ethernet Microdock
* E-machines Netdock

Unfortunately these items are pretty difficult to get hold of in general, let alone in the UK. I've bought a few Asante and Newer Microdocks on eBay for about £8 - 12 each and have yet to get one working. Last time I saw a 16sce on eBay it went for about £80. I've never seen the e-machines dock anywhere...

Worst case scenario is you have to buy a Duo Dock II and use an AAUI adapter with it for 10baseT

Don't give up on your Asante

Don't give up on your Asante MICRO EN/SC quite yet! Mine works just fine with the Apple MiniDock and the Newer SCSI MicroDock. I remember having enough trouble with the first one that I got a replacement on eBay. Then I didn't try it for the longest time because I'd seen erronious info about the 2300c not supporting it. Somewhere here, or in the 68kMLA archive, you should be able to search out the posts that set me straight. On both forums search for threads posted in by "Trash80toG-4" for "micro en/sc" is you get too mayn hits with general terms.

I don't remember/didn't document how I got it up and running, but I may be checking it out in order to run the proper installer on one of my pair of 1400c playthings.

jt

edit: Let me revise that, it works great for 10baseT with those Docks, did yours work for networking , but not for Internet/PPP/whatever?

Duo 2300c and ethernet connection...

Wonderful feedback...
the main problem is that software driver supplied by asante doesn't recognise that the adapter is plugged in the HDI port and thus won't install. Any ideas?

YUP! Track down TT and start

YUP! Track down TT and start living by it! Acute

In the meantime, email me and I'll reply with the full report and a screen shot of the three control panel settings from 2300c@ as attachments from my real mail address.

I ran TT with the SCSIMicroDoc and EN S/C up and running, I transferred the files over 10bT to my G4. Look thru the .txt of the TT report on my config when you get it and try to spot the specifics of any Asante drivers etc. and I'll try to identify which of my folder full of installers I'm using.

btw: after you get your 2300c up and online with that EN S/C, you're going to coach me thru the rest of the process! Wink

Note to T.O. and the mod squad: We really need to have troubleshooting S.O.P. codified in a howto article and a prominent link to it. The basics of what to report and how to format a request for help with diagnostics aren't obvious even to veteran degubbers when they have problems themselves!

jt =8-/

edit: IIRC, I just put the links to downloads for my favorite utilities in the Links Project thread in the Peripherals forum at the new 68kMLA. I'll try to put a link to it in my profile/sig/whatever and in the email when I send you the report/piccie.

See DeclROM Spelunking Tools post in the Links Project and with any luck at all, I'll have posted a link to the latest version of TattleTech (FreeWare) by the time you look for it.

One of my favorite Mac resources has an older version handy in the meantime:

I just hooked up my other Micro EN S/C (ThinNet/10baseT) to 2300c2 and Apple's Duo MiniDock and can report that it works just fine too!

TattleTech Report?

Make sure to report your results back here in this thread when you find out something useful. That way the debugging session winds up in the archive for future EN S/C owners to search.

It's all in the OS methinks...

After some much needed and helpful stuff (especially from jt), I'm coming to the conclusion that the support issue for the Asante adapter is based around the OS. I'm running 8.6 on the Duo and it's just not having any of it...I'll try it with 7.6 and see how it pans out...

Drivel Alert!

The relevant info (that I would have finished typing here if I hadn't taken it waaaay over the top) is hiding somewhere in the link below to an incredibly long, convoluted, semi-coherent and run-on sentence infested post (near the end.) The restof the info may be edited heavily and reposted here whenever I get arou . . . if it's still pertinent to the debugging at hand!

E-Machines EtherDock

I have an E-Machines Etherdock which is like a MiniDock with an ethernet jack where the modem jack normally goes. Found it at Goodwill for $25.
Before that, I hooked to my network via LocalTalk thru a Dayna Mini-EtherPrint (LT to EN bridge). The bridges were very common for hooking LocalTalk printers to Ethernet. Made by Dayna, Farallon, Asante, and others.

I love these coincidences, fr

I love these coincidences, from researching something entirely different, for someone over at the barracks, I've got the May '94 MacWorld EtherDock review right here! Could you share/post or email screen shots of the full "Recommended" and "All" selections available to you in the Monitors Control Panel? That thing does 19" of 4 bit color pixels!?!?!?! WOW! iWant1!!!

I only remembered the UltraDock(?) doing anything over 16" resolution.

What do they mean by "supports television monitors with RGB input?"

What OS versions have you run with it, have you gotten on the web with it. how, and using what for software/drivers/OS etc. to do it?

If you email a full TattleTech report on such an internet capable config to me, I'll proba . . . ? . . . be very happy! Acute

TIA!
jt

p.s. you wouldn't happen to have gotten a side order of manual to scan with that delicious tidbit while foraging your way thru Goodwill, would you? :ebc:

Suggestion: If you are going to be posting old hacks/articles/content for very much longer, or any quantity of new content over the next week or month or two, you REALLY ought to do the "recent" window division stuff NOW! Even I don't want to wade thru this much content post clutter to see if someone finally replied in an intriquing discussion topic.

Opinion: I think posting is way off track, more than learning curves and mid-winter doldrums can account for, and clutter confusion would be my prime suspect.

2300c INTERNAL Micro EN S/C-10T . . .

First, thing things first! Try booting from a 7.5.3 CD and running the 5.5 installer on you 2300c as it stands now. I've got two old Appled Caddy loaders that I leave hooked together and all set to boot from one CD and install from the other. IIRC, I've faked installers out of their shorts with that move. It's also one of the bes debugging setups going if you've got a lot of old Macs. If you can get it to install, it might work under 8.6, all we really know is that the installer is balky when it sees a newer OS than it's expecting to deal with do to its resease date. The drivers could be compatible. I've been seeing incompatability reports on .jp sites that I'd expect to have the real scoop.

Asante Micro EN S/C INTERNAL 10baseT Hack

If you can get a 2300c, networked and online under a later version OS, the Micro EN S/C or EN S/C-10T is DEFINITELY the way to go. I'd thought it was the other SCSI/10baseT, but I just cracked the case of the Asante EN S/C-10T again and this is the one I'd posted about that has one whole side of the PCB just WAITING to be lopped off! There are a grand total of five components besides the RJ-45 and the Power Plug that need to be moved. Four of them are the good stuff, big'ole thruhole wire lead resistors, a xener and a cap from Crap Shack! There's just one itsy bitsy surface mount zit that may or may not need to be relocated.

Taking the 4 LED towers off and chopping off the board real estate they occupy makes this a snap in terms of mechanical fit. After an L shaped trim job, the 10T's PCB will fit easily within the modem bay and 14.4 is for the birds anyway. Might as well trim there too, the towers are way too tall moving replacement LED's to drilled holes somewhere inboard of the power-on button on the top deck is a no-brainer anyway. Blue ones would look VERY slick, maybe a white disk access LED at the same time! Wink

The SCSI Plug is on a jumper cable that mates with a 2 x 14 header block (2.5" HDD interface sized) just dying to marry up with an adapter to a standard internal SCSI cable.

Lets see . . . oh yeah, the PCB is only two sided, and they left wide translucent bands right across all the cut lines so you can "candle" the PCB to scope out how simple it'd be to rewire it . . .

. . . oh! . . . one more little thing! It just might be possible to route both an RJ-45 AND a high density SCSI connection out thru the side panel if you were willing to give up being able to remove your RAM card without disassembling the Duo.

MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :ebc:

2300c OS 8.6 EN S/C driver . . .

Back again, I'm glad you got me obsessing about 2300c/EN S/C issues for a bit. Looks like I might have uncovered 13 pages of 2 year old docs harvested from EN S/C websearches. Dunno how helpful they'll be, but if you'd like them, I can send you a really long email . . .

. . . or another attachment of .txt or cwk5 Wink

The context within which I found it was the good part. It was in a folder titled "Asante" along with the 5.6.1 installer on the 8.6 partition of PowerDuo. I began the installation, just to see what happened and it appears that it may work. You should be able to download it from Asante's site, that's probably where I got it. IIRC, I never tried it on PowerDuo because getting 2300c2 up and running under 7.5.5 to see if I could use the grlf's cable modem was all I really wanted test out the time. That didn't work because I couldn't download anything and get it onto the 'book, BTW. However, I got a really good Verizon DSL tech rep the last time I called, he gave me the scoop tor connectiong with 68k era goodies, but I haven't had a chance to test out yet his recommendation. It's scribbled inside the manual cover . . . erm . . . . * hopefully * . . . uhhhh! . . . * scampers off . . .* YUP! He said ENTERNET+ was what I needed to connect with the network, when I'd mentioned FreePPP.
* sighs . . . now that the info's backed up safely to 'fritter! :ebc: *

edit: see subject specific thead covering this and other netware for ancient Macs:

How do you like 8.6 on your 2300c?

What rev of the installer had you tried and what were the symptoms of incompatibility with the 2300c. You might want to mention its config details too.

Duo 2300c + O.S.8.6 + Micro EN S/C = COMPATABLE!

Well, the EN/SC-10T worked when I tried the install again on the 8.6 partition of 2300c1 (aka PowerDuo) and I transferred the TattleTech report over 10baseT! I ran the 5.6.1 installer from a floppy made using the Disk Copy Rev. in the installer .sea along with the disk image. It failed when I tried running it from the Duo's hard drive while in the dock earlier today, because it was looking for the mounted installer floppy.

Configuration:

Duo 2300c
O.S. 8.6
Apple MiniDock
HDI-20 FDD
ADB Keyboard
Asante Micro EN S/C-10T

This Duo's KBD and trackpad are flakey, three times out of four, it boots with extensions off, which is why the TT data is abbreviated.

Oddly enough, it ALMOST works under 9.0 on Beater, my 1400c. I got a couple of Finder crapouts, but I could open all the control panels. Asante's 5.6.1 driver doesn't get along nearly as well with 8.1 on the 1400c, I got random System freezes and opening related control panels seemed like russian roulette with 4 out of six chambers loaded, NOT very good at all. The installer ran just fine on both and the extension loads at startup, but it's not worth tracking down the incompatabilities at this point.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if a workaround for an O.S. 9.0 manual setup ended up working! Wink

Going but not gone...

Following jt's advice about loadingthe software from the floppy not the hard disc , I managed to get the software driver installed. However, I am unable to configure the CP's properly...Alternative Ethernet now appears in the drop-down menu in AppleTalk (along with Printer and Modem options) but when I select this it gives me the 'check your netwrking connections' stuff. Any chance of a screen shot of 8.6 CP's...please?

Turn on TCP/IP in its Control

Turn on TCP/IP in its Control Panel first and then try Alternate Ethernet again. IIRC, that's all I had to do.

jt

edit (at a MUCH more reasonable hour): Screen shot is waiting in your mailbox and 2300c#1 is feeling muuuuuch better now. You've actually done me a favor by asking for that screen shot. In order to ensure this balky thing booted with extensions ON for a change, I yanked the keyboard off to boot up with just the trusty dinokidz KBD (and luckily its somewhat flakey mouse) to see if it was really a KBD/shft key problem or a power manager problem. The trackpad didn't seeem to wanna work without the keyboard attached, but that could have been a knocked loose connection due to coffee deprivation. Set up tyour screenshot and, right after transferring and emailing the file, I transplanted the extra KBD from an eBay parts lot (that's been sitting here for almost two years ::)) and this lil'pup is as good as new! Not only that, the "New In Bag" KBD feels so nice it'll get swapped out with trackball upgraded 2300c2's mushyboard ASAP!

. . . thanks for the kick in the pants! Acute

Micro EN S/C TCP/IP AutoConfig Bug?

note: this is a PRELIMINARY REPORT (too tired to finish ATM and testing is not complete in any case) =8-P

I'm beginning to suspect a difference in behavior between the two revs I've been playing with during initial configurations after software installation. Summary of hardware (TattleTech Reports may be appended at a later date)

Duo 2300c/NewerTech SCSI MicroDock . . . 5.6.1 Driver Installation running under 8.6

Symptoms:

1) EN S/C-10Tappears to autoconfigure DHCP Server TCP/IP settings correctly . . .
2) EN S/C . . . erm . . . apparently DOES NOT!
3) switching to "Alternate Ethernet" in the AppleTalk Control Panel yields error message
4) DHCP Server "Alternate Ethernet" settings come up blank in TCP/IP Control Panel
5) blindly trying alternatives got tester absolutely nowhere . . .
6) switching to the EN/SC-10T autoconfigures properly . . .
7) reinstalling the EN S/C results in carryover of (EN S/C-10T's) DHCP Server TCP/IP settings . . .
8] (HAR!(tm) Note to T.O. this is a particularly humorous context for Dirol to show up in a post's numbered listings!) . . . still fails to work this time around (but it worked with . . . ?)
9) drives tester up t . . . upon detection, abruplty terminates temporary lapses of sanity . . .

Oh lord won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz

I'm still struggling with the network thang...Following excellent advice and screenshots from jt, the Duo's still not having any of it. When I choose the Alternative Ethernet option from the drop-down menu in Appletalk , I still get the 'your network connection may be at fault' type thing. Looking at the screen shots that jt sent me, it may be that the problem is that I can't specify a hardware address for ethernet. It's the aut . . . stupid autosensing! ;-)

I took a peak into the pages and pages of stuff I got off the web and it looks like the 10baseT/ThinNet autosensing "feature" of the standard EN S/C makes it a different beast than my EN S/C-10T. I assume someone who knows how to do manual configurations could do it, dunno though. The approach knuckledraggers like myself would normally take'd be to crack the case, figure out how to bork the offending circuitry, desolder the pins holding it on and then stomp the snot outta that annoying round projection thingie.

The case clips together, squeeze the seams on the sides that don't have connectors sticking out of them and you'll see how to do it.

If you are trying to plug int

If you are trying to plug into an auto speed sensing hub/router (a 10/100 or something) you might try sticking a plain vanilla, old 10Base-T hub between the Mac and the router. This will force the router to use 10Base-T and won't try to auto speed sense the Mac, which has been known to bork certain brands of NICs for Macs.

It ain't the hub . . .

Hi, Jon . . . don’t think that’s it, I’m using a simple 10baseT hub and the EN S/C has been nothing but trouble. I’d been alternating with a functional EN S/C-10T as control for the experimentation, so it’s fairly clear that there are major differences in the way the models function. I was using NewerTech’s SCSI MicroDock last time around, but I think I’ll switch back to an Apple MiniDock alternately if I continue to see problems after phase II.

I did notice that the only times the EN S/C-10T had any problem with switching to Ethernet, inserting it into my 10baseT Card equipped Dock had the Duo hooked right up to ethernet the next time I pulled it and hooked it up to the with the EN S/C-10T /MicroDock combo. Something about dock services/reconfiguration is dancing around in the back of my head, but I haven’t pinned it down.

It may be a moot point anyway, phase II is underway . . . I’m partway through eviscerating the EN S/C, it’ll be borked permanently or a happy little EN S/C-10T when I’ve finished with it!

So far so good! That disgusting lil'network rodent is not working just as well as before! I know because I check it after removing each giblet!

I've got several Micro EN/SC devices, these are the jobbies _without_ a thinnet connector, with _only_ an RJ45 connector. I've been using them with scsi mini-docks on my Duos, from 230 (OS 7.1? IIRC) up to 2300 (OS9.1) and have had no problems, well except those I caused myself. Smile

ISTR that the Asanté installer had some sort of option to install a driver even if the device wasn't present. Something like a 'custom' install or something. Been awhile though since I last used that installer . . .

How would one use a "Farallon AAUI with an adapter" on a Duo? Unless you mean attached to an AAUI-equipped fullsized dock? And if so, why would that be unsupported? AFAIK, AAUI is AAUI, no such thing as "not supported" if the dang thing will plug in.

However, the best solution for any Duo is an ethernet mini-dock, so keep eBaying for one, they turn up regularly. You might also try subscribing to the LEM swap mail list as well as the Duo mail list for more leads.

Patience will be rewarded. Smile
