Booting from CD

I have got a PowerMac 6100 (i think the PC compatible, with command+enter i can run Windows95).
How can i boot from CD, i want to reinstall MacOS 8.1, or maybe install Linux on it.

Boot from CD

While the CD is in the drive, restart the machine and hold down the C key as soon as you hear the startup chime, until the "Happy Mac" logo appears. It will then boot up from the system folder on the CD.

Ok, which Linux distro should

Ok, which Linux distro should i take?
*Slackintosh is idle, and i can't get it
*Debian are many CD's and i have a slow internet connection.

I don't need X or something, only a commandline Linux is enough.

Make sure the caps lock isn't

Make sure the caps lock isn't on when you're trying to start it with the c key depressed.

If that doesn't work you might try selecting the 8.1 disk as the startup disk in the Startup Disk control panel

Was your CD burnt on a window

Was your CD burnt on a windows machine? That can b0rk bootability.

Holding down C doesn't work on all machines, and I can't remember whether the 6100 is one of them. Try Option-Apple-Shift-Delete. If you can find the SCSI ID of the CDROM drive (with Apple System Profiler or SCSI probe or whatever) try that key combo and hold down that number as well. If you have enough fingers Smile

I burned a Gentoo PPC minimal

I burned a Gentoo PPC minimal install CD on my Linux PC,
i tried everything, the C key, the Option+Apple+Shift+Delete, the Option+Apple+Shift+Delete+SCSI ID.
But the only thing i get is the MacOs loading screen with "Extensions Disabled"

I very much doubt that Gentoo

I very much doubt that Gentoo will support a 6100. The x100 series have a very different architecture (Nubus) from later (PCI) machines. The only nixen I know of that work are MKLinux (an Apple Unix that is no longer developed) and YellowDog with some borrowed code from MKL. Which you'll have to compile in yourself. See this article and this page will tell you everything you need to know

Can you see the contents of either CD when booted from the existing OS? Make a boot floppy from the "Disk Tools" image on the 8.1 CD before experimenting further. This will save your neck if you screw up.

And realistically, a modern *nix is going to crawl on that machine. You probably are better off sticking with MacOS 8.1, or 8.6-9.1 if you have lots of RAM.

For more general information about the 6100 see Kan's Page - the Linux info is a bit outdated, but the MacOS info is useful.
