Monitor Hack

OK, so I've been told a million times not to open a monitor cause of the risk of shock. Awhile ago I got 2 dead 17" Apple Blue & White monitors. I gutted one and didn't die but tried to handle it by the cord not caring what happend to the tube itself. Well I have a G3 B&W that I'm upgrading and I'd like to use the 2 B&W monitors. Can anyone point me to a guide or anything to help me in gutting a working 17" monitor and putting it into the B&W case?? I'm gonna do it anyway so don't tell me not to, just any tips or safty procautions or a guide or anybody that has done this before. Thanks much.

PS I use to stop on the applefritter boards awhile back under the handle zombiekitty but I guess I forgot my password or my account was deleated.

You weren't killed because the throwback and tube had most likely be discharged... I assume the monitors had been unplugged. Be warned, though, monitors can keep a charge for a year more sometimes.

As for the B/W 17" screens, the sony CPD 17" monitors use the same Trinitron tube and innards. You an find them for pennies at autions, Goodwill, or on eBay. Don't spend too much tho, you can get a nice used 17" trinitron B/W screen for 40 bucks at most.

Sorry but the Blue and White

Sorry but the Blue and White CRT Studio Displays are based on an LG monitor. Those are known for having the flybacks die on them. Apple has an extended warranty repair programme on them. There are a couple of threads around here about this. One started by me and one started by Reverend Darkness.

I replaced the flyback in mine my self and it runs great. It cost me about $30 for the part and a few hours of time. If you do decide to fix it your self get the repair manual as it helps in take apart and in making adjustments.

Don't try fixing a monitor yourself. It has high voltages and can kill or seriously injure you if you do not know what you are doing.

The 17" Studio Display used a Mitsubishi Diamondtron tube. The 21" model was a Trinitron.

Correct, and if you check the Apple Discussion group for older monitors you'll find a number to call Apple and possibly get it fixed, or replaced by a black Mitsubishi 17 inch. There are posts within the last couple of months that claim to have had their B&W 17 inch CRT monitors replaced by Apple at no cost. Not replaced with the blue & white monitor though which sucks.

I have one that's acting up but it matches my computer and I hate to put anything else on my desk becasue it looks so cool with the G3.

Can you get the manual on the web somewhere? It's not at GSX anymore. They just have a place holder pdf telling you how to send them in to apple to be replaced/disposed of. I guess they nuked a couple of techs so they don't want us to fix them any more.
