Sleepy iBook

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm under the impression that the iBooks go to sleep when they're closed. I'd like mine to stay awake when closed and on battery power, so I'm thinking about installing a switch on whatever sensor/switch controls that behaviour. Would anyone know where that thing is? I don't want to disassemble the whole thing again just to find it.

I believe..

that the switch on the white iBook is in the lid by the switch, I also think that the Toilet seat/purse is in the lid as well

You can easily do this via op

You can easily do this via open firmware. I had it on my iBook for a while. The problem is they get pretty warm. They have a fair amount of heat escape through the keyboard and palm rest area. Closing it up makes them run much warmer, especially if you are using an external display. So overall, I advise against it. But if you really want to, you can also change it via OF, no hardware "switch" is required.

Doable but Dangerous

I agree. It can easily be done, but when the ibook is shut, the vents in the rear are closed off. This is where the fan is. You run the risk of overheating and melting down your ibook if you operate it with the screen in the "sleep" position. Its pretty neat to do, but there is a reason that Apple did not make this an option.

re: Doable but Dangerous

this seems to be the conventional wisdom, but does anyone here have any firsthand knowledge about whether running an iBook shut will damage anything?

In fact, the fan exhaust area is not obstructed when the lid is shut, it actually has less 'blockage' than when the lid is open. Also, I seriously doubt the keyboard and palmrest transmit/radiate much heat, though I'll be interested to hear other opinions or even knowledge if ya got it.

Please note that I'm not asserting it's OK to run an iBook with the lid shut, I'm merely asking the question.

I have run both iBook and Pismo

with the lids closed. If you want to try it, check out this link:

http://www.rutemoeller.com/mp/ibook/ibook_e.html

and try it with an external monitor and keyboard. If it overheats, than don't do it... Personally, I have had no problems when doing it with either one. However, if you do it... put it on low proc. power, and turn the light al the way down. Chow....

Am I correct?

Am I correct in thinking that there was once a bug in early iBooks which prevented them from going to sleep when the lid was closed and there was a network connection present?

Didn't they melt?

I have heard never about this as I never tried doing this with an early iBook. I have the 900MHz model and have never tried it on an earlier iBook.
However, I no that the early G4 iBooks had this problem.

Didn’t they melt?

Nope.

sleepy iBook

Is anyone familiar with the following problem: out of the blue the iBook goes to sleep while open and in operation, and has to be closed and reopened in order to wake up. But now the lid can only be opened to around 90 degrees. A hair more and it's asleep again. Thus a wedge has to be put under the base in order to see the screen properly. Machine is going on two years old, it's a back-to-the-factory repair job (500€) and I'm wondering if this is a planned obsolescence issue. Thanks for any suggestions.

Download "Temperature monitor

Download "Temperature monitor" so you can see how warm your computer gets inside... If something gets to warm you can just shut it down...

My only problem is that I don't know what's to warm...

Wakes up

My Clamshell (Tangerine, mk1) seems to wake up for no apparant reason while asleep with the lid shut, it does get very warm, but I have yet to find the keyboard melted, I don't know why it does this though.

With The Lid Shut...

I have a PowerBook 1400c with the 233 MHz G3 upgrade (ie, the earlier revision G3, aka the "Really Hot One.") When I first got it, there were a few times I closed the lid, and figured it went to sleep. Well, it didn't, and I'd wake up the next day and crack it open, and EVERYTHING inside would be REALLY hot, LCD included. Of course now I look for the Blinkie Light after I do it. Biggrin

I use this for an example, because it's probably the Hottest PowerBook Known To Man. I've seen no ill effect from it the two or so times it happened. I do often consider sticking the 166MHz chip back in it though, if for nothing else other than to get some decent battery life back...

An iBook will wake up when any USB devices are powered up/down or (un)plugged. Also are you running the latest patches for your OS/firmware? Sometime these things get fixed before most people notice them, except those who fall behind in patches...

Re: iBook

I did know about USB, but my iBook seems to ware up at random, it is usually connected via Airport to the internet (DSL), however, but it has all the latest patches applied, it is running 10.2.8 (waiting for 10.4).

My iBook used to wake up rand

My iBook used to wake up randomly when it was on wired ethernet. Now, on my Netgear WiFi router nothing strange happens. I haven't left it plugged into ethernet for very long since I got an AP card, so I dunno if it still has that problem. You might check your Energy Saver settings to see if it is set to wake for any of the network events.

I had the same problem w/my clamshell (Graphite SE); the problem was the keyboard had come unfastened on the left hand side. Try snugly re-seating the keyboard; that ended my problem.
