I'm very dissapointed..

I think we could have done a better job on the interface and such, the forum is very slow even on DSL and cable, and it is hard to learn to use for noobs and a very UGLY interface that doesn't go with AppleFritter at all, at least in my opinion. The clikcable smileys still dont work, and cubKid has stopped using it altogether because it is so slow and crappy.

The new applefritter theme has a spacer image hat doesn't load over the logo now, and it is very very slow.

Im digging the new photo albums....they are so much easier than uploading to a website...and much more convienient. Everything else on the site is cool...beside the forum and the interface.

I'm on a DSL connection and I'm not having any speed problems even with some large bandwidth sucking downloads going on in the background. For me its no different than the old forums.

As for the interface I'm getting used to it. Give it some time. There was a good deal of backlash when the YaBB look was changed from a brown/black/yellow scheme to the current design.

The main page clearly states that this whole interface is still being tweaked. ExParrot has even stated that the forums are eventually going to look more YaBB-like. And whats with the "we could have done a better job" comment? Did you contribute anything besides your de-constructive criticism? No one is getting paid to run this site, Tom Owad and company are doing this on there own personal time, so you have no right to complain. And if you and cubKid want a better forum, make one yourself.

A generalised reply to complaints:

1. The site is actually running faster than YaBB as it isn't continually caching files for searches. However we are witnessing a major performance hit on the server as Drupal seems to increase the load on the processor. Anywho, I'm on 512k DSL and AF2.0 runs like greased lightning compared to YaBB.

2. AF2.0 is still effectively a beta, quit whining about interfaces and the like - they're all works in progress.

3. If 'we' want to play a greater role on the 'interface and such' then 'we' ought to have offered to lend a hand in the tasks that needed completing to get the site up and running. Failing that buy a copy of Hardware Hacking so we can afford some better kit to run the site on.

Interesting new look. It will probably sort itself out in the end but it's just far too spartan and clunky to get used to at the moment. I would really prefer if it had all stayed in the "sandbox" till it was perfect. On a nicer note however, the forums are the fastest I've ever browsed on a 56k

I think that applefritter 2.0 is great. With everything new comes 'glitches' and that is to be expected.

I don't see the difference in running speed (I'm on DSL though), and the forum interface seems fine to me.

My only real complaint is the navigation, but its like the old fritter when I first joined. I'm sure I'll get used to it just like I did the other one, and in fact the new one is starting to grow on me. The gallery and blog features are nice, and the layout is clean and simple. As far as the speed goes I never really had much of a problem. It turns out my cable was dragging due to (insert cracked out adelphia excuse here) so my whole surfing habits were slowed to an almost crawl.

My $0.02

The spacer image over the logo is there to help make translucent PNGs show up right in Internet Explorer for Windows. And with a little PHP magic, that only is there for IE/Win, good browsers only get the real image. Of course, if you have changed your user agent to make it say that you're using IE/Win when you aren't...

Right now, I have no time to work on the theme. I'm surprised I have time to IRC anymore, much less read the forums.

Feel free, err, feel encouraged to write your own theme for Drupal.

Yup, that's right. Y'all had the chance to contribute here, but didn't lift a finger and now you're whining like you're actually -owed- the Applefritter you wanted.

Funny...lots of things in life work like this. What you get out of it depends on what you put into it.

Me, I'm content. I can't say I did bum to contribute to the new AF, so I have no right to complain. Thankfully, I like it. I like the ability to upload images and files, the blog (or blarg, in my case so far...), and while still a work in progress, I think there's great potential to make something far superior to the original forums.
And I shall happily ride the coat-tails the whole way along, and be thankful Tom, Ex-Parrot and all the others working 'under the hood' have done so much work to try and improve the free ride you and I are getting.

Yep, I agree. And that goes for the site designers as well. It seems to me that if AF is intended to be a draw, but lots of its visitors don't like the interface, then the designers ought to pay attention to it. Just saying "well too bad" doesn't help anyone, either.

Yeah, lots of people are posting negative criticism, sure. But if the designers want to have the best possible site, they should listen to that, too.
