Plextor DVD Burner

I've got an internal Plextor PX-712A DVD burner and no computer to insert it into. If I buy an external enclosure for my iMac G4 USB2, is there any guarantee that it will work? I don't want to blow $70 CDN on something that won't function.

if it is a firewire case that you buy to put it in then yes, it will work.

But...

...if you plan to use iMovie to burn DVD's you'll need to hack the software to get an external DVD writer to work. I guess that's part of Apple's lame DRM, that it requires that you use an Apple-installed internal DVD burner with their software.

From what I understand, it's a fairly simple hack; a quick Google should yield good results.

Also, shop around a bit for the external enclosure. You should be able to do better than $70 for one. I've been shopping for one this week & have found several places online with decent units sporting Oxford 911 chipsets that cost $30-40 US.

IIRC, iDVD 5 will not only let you burn to external DVD writers, but to disc images too.

To find out if the Plextor drive is natively supported by OS X, check out the compatibility reports on www.xlr8yourmac.com.

Any plextor to my knowldge wi

Any plextor to my knowldge will work if you use patchburn 2 (for 10.2.8) or 3 (for 10.2.3). It can work in a USB enclosure, but it will only be able to burn at a slower speed. I would go FireWire.
