System software for 128k mac

My original system software discs for my 128k mac (the orginal Mac) are, after 20 years, no longer usable. I'm looking to purchase either original system discs or working copies on 400k discs. Please let me know what you have available and your price.

Thank you!

Free system and software downloads from Apple Computer

Hello,

Most of Apple's older "legacy" software is available for free download at:
http://www.info.apple.com/support/oldersoftwarelist.html

There are downloads all the way back to System 6, and a whole bunch of other older programs as well. You might have to download them with a more modern Mac, and then place them on disks yourself, but it would probably be cheaper for you.

Apple's specs for the Mac 128K state that it can use system software from 1.0 to 7.01P

The specs page is at:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=112162

Hope this helps.

Free System software

Michael;

Thanks for taking the time to respond to my search. I did not know that a 128k Mac will run system software up to version 7.01. I will try downloading this software onto my mac laptop and loading it onto 400k diskettes.

Thanks again for the tip!

System 7 on a 128K mac? heh heh heh heh heh

Biggrin Yeah, right! Sorry to burst your collective bubbles but there's no way a 128K will support sys7. Try maybe System 3.2, but IIRC System 4.2/5.0 was too 'bloated' to even boot a 128K let alone run anything.

Plus, don't forget the 128K has only a 400K drive, go and try to fit any System 7 OS into 400K! It's tough enough to get it onto a 800K floppy. Heh heh, sometime I'll have to try my HD20 with 7.01 on one of my 128Ks, that'll be a funny.

A 512K can run System 6, but there's precious little RAM left for apps. System 7 requires a 2MB Plus at the very least, but 4MB is more realistic.

Whether it will run it or not

Whether it will run it or not will have to be determined. I have run a lot of programs that no one else could run on my older systems. It may require some tweaking, or there might be a "reduced" version of System 7. Notice that the tech specs said 7.01P (the P may be an indicator of a specific revision).

Either way, system 6 is available on the site for download as well.

And, if that doesn't work, then there are other versions there too. So, it may just take some trial and tweaking to get it to work. Still better than paying a premium for older disks.

{John Wayne voice} Now listen up fella {/John Wayne voice}

:coolmac: to someone who has two original 128Ks, plus two upgraded 128Ks (512K RAM), as well as a largish number of 512Ks, Pluses, SEs, SE/30s . . . etc., along with copies of every single released MacOS from .85 to 10.3.8 (plus any number of unreleased OS versions.) Using my own experience as a guide, I'm only suggesting what's doable in the real world. Blum 3

Certainly anyone can give anything a try and discover what works, and what doesn't, for themselves. I'm not even being a wiseass by suggesting that folks do try it for themselves. Still, heh heh heh heh, sys7 on a 128K . . . it is to laugh! Biggrin

For a comprehensive list of Mac OS DLs, visit Gamba's OS DL page. I'd suggest starting with System software 1.1 (System file v3.2) which introduced HFS, alot better than and a big step up from the original MFS. I remember how cool it was to make that big jump to HFS, kinda like the jump from HFS to HFS+ (but maybe even bigger!)

400k disks

Regardless of the system version that you are going to be able to use i believe that the biggest challenge will be to write to a 400k disk. You'll need a pretty old machine to do that. Post back to let everybody know how it went as i also have an old 128k with no longer usable disks.
I stopped trying to make it work because I had no machine that could write a 400k disk. (i have now my 128k in storage so i'm not going to try again but it would be nice to know).
good luck!

A Macintosh SE using 800k dis

A Macintosh SE using 800k disks can format the disks as 400k to use on the Mac Plus, and transferring data to the SE is no problem as long as you have one hard drive and an external Superdrive for it. Alternatively, you could use Localtalk to transfer to the SE.

External Harddrive

Apple released a 30 meg external harddrive for the 128k that plugged into the sereal port. Much like the lisa's. Maby apple is refering to using this to run 7.

The p at the end is just specifing a sub version of os 7. Os 7 had the most releases of any mac os. There was quite literally a version for almost every macintosh. ANd then you needed the enablers.

I would assume in this case that the p means that it dosnt have support for newer hardware and dosnt use the newer features of the new macs. It was made for a mac from 1984.
