I have a 1400c/117 and a 1400cs/166. How interchangeable are parts between these? They both work but I was wondering how easy it is to change processors and screens or if would make much of a difference? Would a sonnet upgrade be a better option? Machines are only used by kids for searching

Remove the screen of the 1400c and insert it in the 1400/166.
There are issues with putting the 133 and 166 processors into the 117 MHz model, but other than that all parts should be interchangable.
As imacG3 suggests, putting the 'c' LCD onto the faster 166 base will give you one better machine (The 'c' being an active matrix LCD, and the 'cs' being a lesser passive matrix).
For the cost of the Sonnet upgrade, you might be better off getting a G3 all-in-one or such off ebay for the kids.

Keep the 1400c for the better screen. You could sell the 1400cs/166 on eBay to defray the cost of a Sonnet or NuPowr upgrade. Sonnets are running about $175 and up for a 333 -- 466 Mhz upgrade. Nupowrs (233 - 250 Mhz) are running between $80 to $100. If you have enough in left in the 166 to make it a viable machine, you could make enough on eBay by selling to make the upgrade more affordable. The G3 at most any speed makes a world of difference in a 1400. If their only use is web browsing, even a G3 250 should be fine.
