Strange google ads...

Ok, so I was randomly surfing the fritter in my endless boredom when I noticed something rather wierd. The ads at the left have been showing japanese charactered ads and sometimes something totally different than the usual apple ads. Here are a couple of pics. Is it just me or what? I'm in the US so unless my region settings have changed (which I doubt) it must be google.

Remarkable

Remarkable, I thought that I was the only person in this great big shiny world that suffered from endless boredom.

Hmm... Perhaps my shrink is wrong. There just might be a whole pile of people out there that suffer from endless boredom.

Well

I hate to burst that little bubble you're in, but there are bored people out there. As for the ads, I've run across several google searches that have returned results in foreign languages as well (even when I search english pages).

Nah, You Misunderstood

My shrink says that there are no other bored people out there. He says that everybody lives very fulfilling lives and just don't have time to get bored.

He cast me in the role of freak... the only person on the planet with enough *extra* time to get bored.

Ah, I can't tell you how much of a burden has been lifted from my shoulders. Learning that there are *other* bored people out there makes me feel, well, just so gosh darn warm & fuzzy inside...

Perhaps, in your spare time, you could learn a foreign language so that you can understand these ads.

Here's my suggestion of languages to learn:

Chinese, Japanese, German, Spanish, Russian, Dutch, French, Cantonese, etc. The list is endless.

Good luck und gute nacht (Good night in German)

Rock On, Dude.

Have a look at http://www.goo

Have a look at http://www.google.com/search?q=bored+people then.
Of course, everyone knows the internet is just an artificial construct sponsored by psychiatrists everywhere in a plot to get more money.

That post was ummm... interesting. Anyways, I'm lucky to know the english language, let alone learn another one. I'd probably be speaking a combination of several all at once without even realising it. Anyways, I just had to vent. I slept 15+ hours so I'm a bit loopy. I think I'm going back to bed. Smile

I used to sleep alot too...

I used to sleep alot too. At least until my shrink told me that I should not get more than eight hours of sleep per night. Now I'm something of an insomniac and my boredom has increased steadily.

I told my shrink about the rise in my boredom factor and he just politely informed me that I was "going against the wind."

Man, my shrink diagnosed me so well. Ah well, I guess that's why he gets paid the big bucks and I get to sit around having fun with my Macintosh.

Ya know, I wouldn't trade places with him for all the money in the world.

You know what's really funny?

Watching butter melt. You sit there and say stuff like "HAHAHA! You're turning into LIQUID!".

:P

I got a machine
And I took over the world
In one weekend
I took over the world
With my machine
I did it because
I was looking for a project
And it was either
Take over the world or learn french
So I took over the world
And next weekend
I can learn french
I got a machine
And I took over the world
But nothing changed
That wouldn’t be fair

The week after that
I will taunt butter
As it melts

I find this very offensive. I take great pains to ensure that the few ads on Applefritter are very discreet. If you're going to block them, do not consume my resources.

relevance...

I think the key is not that the ads are bad, as the few (and thank you for that) ads I see are somewhat relevant to the topic I am viewing. i.e. adds for batteries for laptops when viewing threads about laptop batteries, etc.

However, as I am writing this post, there is an add to my left that is entirely of chinese/japanese characters in glyphic style. The link takes me to http://www.jmdp.or.jp/?as_grant. I find these adds irrelevant as I cannot understand them in the slightest. I cannot even tell if it is tech related...

While some may prefer no adds at all, most others, like myself, may not care on flip as long as it is something of interest/somehow relevant to the thread topic. Asian characters are not easily understood by the mass of users this site has, and I believe the original question was focused on the relevance of asian characters in the add space - why are they there? is there some way to filter the ads to ensure what is displayed is more digestable to the common AF viewer?

Ads in the common language of this forum (English), are more likely to recieve traffic than ads that hardly any users can understand. I expect you and the advertiser would get more hits on these ads if we could actually read/understand them.

No disrespect intended, the question is can we eliminate the ads that are not in a language commonly used in this forum?

The couple I've seen were sin

The couple I've seen were single ads that occupied the entire banner height, not typical three-line ads. This usually indicates a public service announcements. I've turned PSAs off. Maybe that will resolve the issue.

Has anybody who is not using Safari seen Asian-language ads?

Don't worry Tom I use k-meleon as my browser, which does not support ad-blocking.

Firefox just takes up to darn much ram...and takes forever to start up.

I run Firefox on X.2.8 and I've seen 'em. I don't use the ad blocker because AF w/ the Google ads is much faster than even many sites w/ a single graphical ad.

Well

I understand that every site has to pay its way somehow, and I do think that the ads are fine where they are. They're not obtrusive, don't blink or have you try to shoot a monkey or something, so thats ok. It's just the 'fritter is the only place that I've seen those oddball ads, so I figured I'd see if it was just my computer or this site. Smile

How well does Firefox run on X? On all windows and even linux systems i've run it on it takes an age to start up. Its especially bad under windows XP / 2003 even with the prefetch on. Takes up to half a minute to load sometimes.

Nice!

DDTM:

I like your poem. Did you write it?

It has a very cool and realistic message: Taking over the world may be fun for a while, but then what? What do I do then?

I guess one could take over the world, give it away, and then take it over again... But even that would get boring after a while.

BTW: I don't *actually* see a shrink. However, after rereading my previous posts, I probably should, eh?

I really like your poem, DDTM.

a few things...

TOM:
-- I see the asian stuff when borwsing in Safari as well as in IE 6.0.2800 (a corporate install of IE at my job), so yes, it happens in 'other than Safari.

MANAGED RESISTANCE:
-- Thanks, but I cannot take credit, that is actually the lyrics from a Violent Femmes song, Machine, found on the New Times EP. It is one of my favorates from that album and seemed to fit your humor on shrinks. But thanks! The subtle irony of it all is that one takes over the world, but leaves things unchanged so as to be fair. This also makes it hard to dispute claims that the world was indeed overtaken, since the explantion is offered that as to why no evidence exists - that would not be fair.

It's font related...

I think. I get garbled text like that regularly when I switch fonts while Safari (or Firefox) is running (I work in a prepress shop, and fonts get switched out numerous times daily.) I used to use Suitcase X for a font manager and thought it was Suitcase's fault. We recently started using FontAgent Pro, and the same thing happens. The browsers must just have a tough time with fonts changing.

I run it on my iBook w/ 640MB

I run it on my iBook w/ 640MB RAM, and on my iMac w/ 256MB RAM. FireFox on both beats complete and total snot rockets outta IE. After two years of letting my wife use IE on the iBook I convinced her to try FireFox the toher day. She saw an immediate speed jump in page loading for neopets.com. IE used to take forever to (incorrectly) load the start page for NetZero (I pay the monthly fee for it, so anyone know how to turn that autopage load at connection off?) Safari is ok, but for some reason I find myself taking a shine to Firefox. OS X has the agresssive caching setup and I always sleep my machines instead of shutting them down, so much of it probably stays resident.

lost you?

I have taken over the world.

Nothing has changed.

That would not be fair.

You cannot dispute my claim to have taken over the world as no evidence exists to contradict my claim. The existence of such evidence would indicate that something changed upon the event of my overtaking the world. "But nothing changed" (as that would not be fair), so you will not find any evidence to support you argument that I did not indeed take over the world.

Smile

Firefox Load Times

Firefox can take a while to load, but, for me, loading Firefox once is quicker than loading IE 6-8 times within a day. Plus, tabbed browsing rocks!

Cheers,

The Czar
