Using apple 1 replica for building automation

I'm not too sure if this is the right place to post this question but would it be theoretically possible to enable the apple1 replica to control external circuits such as lights?

I was thinking the replica would be a cool platform for automation as i'm assuming you could set timers etc...

The other question i had was can you interface a dot matrix lcd display (like those in calculators but larger) instead of using the serial or video output?

The idea i had was to build a console with the lcd display and a series of say eight buttons to control the automation system. and when you needed to update the software you could connect a standard keyboard and program as required.

Any suggestions?
Does this make sense?

Yes. If they operate on 5V, you could even hook them directly to the data bus.

Yes. Make sure you get an LCD that accepts standard ASCII input (a handful use a proprietary encoding). Output from the 6821 in parallel ASCII. This is described in more detail in chapter. There are also a few pages here that might help.
