processor dead?

ok, the regulars on the IRC should know the background behind this, but here goes...
I received a board today for my athlon 1GHz (not athlon XP) It uses a socket 462 slot. I popped in the cpu and the think would turn on the fan and sit there. hmm... I reseated everything, and still, the same thing. To make a long story short, I took off the heat sink and put the back of finger to the CPU and noticed that the thing was dead cold. Is this CPU toast, or is there a salvation for it?

If it is toast, I would be willing to send a full K6-2 450MHz set with sound, 10/100 Ethernet, USB and 4MB Video, for a low end athlon.

Any ideas or takers?

by the way...

I have all the jumper settings correct, checked and re-checked on that. Also cross-referenced on the maker's website

Sounds like

a dead chip to me. I have a Duron 800 and 900 that will not run when installed in a motherboard. I'll have to try them again later.

While I do have a couple of Athlon 1000 CPUs, they are in running systems at the moment.

k..

while installing win2k, i kept having kernel panics while setting it up. Turned out that the cache on my hard drive went out. I used the seagate utility disk and turned it off. It runs somewhat slower, especially when it spins up the disks. I have it installed, thx to Jellybeanz which helped me figure out that is was the HD. Smile
Anway, the sempron runs great. It is 1.75GHz and is the fastest pc i have owned to date. I would have to say, it performs better than my new iBook. The setup goes as follows

2x SATA drives
4x IDE drives 133MB's
Coaxial out for srs
6.1 Surround sound with virtual SRS
80GB HD (w/ 8MB cache, now disabled.)
1x 48x CD-Rom (soon to be DVD/CD-RW)
1x Unkown speed CD-Rom (doesn't say, but might be between 8x and 12x)
1x ATX case with no sides.
2x Floppy drives
2x PCI Slot
1x 8x AGP
1x Built-in graphics-card 32MB ram
AMD Sempron 1750MHz (w/512KB L2 Cache, i Think)
1 x Wireless card (Linksys 11Mb'z)
1 1Gb's Ethernet Built-in

I spent $33 USD on the board and they sent me a $150 Board, (nice, huh?) $85 on the AMD Sempron (the cheapest I could find) and $17 256MB PC-2700 Ram. the board an ram came out to about $50 altogether. Not bad, huh? the proc was the most expensice part. you can get these from where i did. www.newegg.com

???

Which model Sempron is that? My 2200 runs at 1500 mhz and was $50 at the time without fan at TigerDirect.

I'm also curious why you didn't go ahead and get 512MB. NewEgg has them for less than $40. Until you got more memory, I would lower the graphics memory to allow more memory for programs.

i have the CPU Overclocked now

comes up as a Sempron 2800+ at 2.1GHz Runs very stable. No special heatsink needed.

BTW: I have wanted to see how fast this thing encodes dvd's. Anyone know of any winblows software that goes from DVD to DIVX/XVID/MPEG-4 that does not contain Spyware/AdWare/Virus's and is free?
