Mac OS 10.3Panther on Beige G3 desktop?

Is it possibe to install mac os 10.3 on a beige G3 without any additional video cards using XPostFacto? The documentation suggests so but I'm not totall sure.

Tried it last night...

It managed to install fine on my 8500 on a 2Gb drive (Ouch!) so I reckon the beige will work fine when I get round to it.

Cheers,

Yup

I have a G3 266 MHz which runs OS 10.3.9 easy without any add-on video card, but you can forget any DVD playback or games with heavy graphics... the onboard video has only 2 MB vRAM Wink

A good upgrade is a ZIF G4 Processor and a ATI radeon 9200 PCI with vRAM at 128 MB... does make things a little better Wink

Yes it's possible to inst

Yes it's possible to install panther or tiger on a Beige G3 using XPostFacto but there is a Black Screen of Death problem that affects some Beige G3's.

The screen goes black when it feels like it (like a blank screensaver) and there is no way to recover from it.

I've been trying to nail the problem for a while now and I finally solved it but it's not an easy solution for a non programmer.

Basically the problem is in the IONDRVSupport.kext kernel extension and it needs to be recompiled from the open darwin sources with some 64 bit enabling source code alterations.

I'll probably try to get the changes into open darwin if they want them.

If you can't compile IONDRV

If you can't compile IONDRVSupport.kext from the darwin source code it might be possible to get the already made darwin version of IONDRVSupport.kext that corresponds to your version of OSX from the darwin release binaries and use it instead of the OSX one.

XPostFacto installs GossamerIONDRVSupport.kext that patches IONDRVSupport.kext to be compatible with OSX 10.3x and above .

So with the darwin IONDRVSupport.kext and XPostFacto's GossamerIONDRVSupport.kext
the black screen of death should not occur anymore.

If there are any problems you could try replacing the darwin IONDRVSupport.kext Info.plist file with the original OSX one.
Tape for OSX is an easy way to work with Info.plist files.

ATIRageProGA needs to be taken out of the extensions folder because it's not compatible with the darwin version of IONDRVSupport.kext (It causes wrong colors to appear).

Of course after these changes you need to trash the Extensions.kextcache and Extensions.mkext files and restart.

All these changes are needed because the OSX 10.3x and above versions of IONDRVSupport.kext cause the Beige G3 to have video problems and the darwin 10.3x and above versions of IONDRVSupport.kext don't.
