Using AIM on an SE/30

I'm trying to get Aol Instant Messanger to work on an SE/30 running 7.5.3. . . now, I imagined this would be SLOW, but never imagined this would happen.

"Could not complete the operation becuase disk is full (-36)."

No, neither of the (partition) disks are full- each have about 100Mb left (on a 256Mb) drive. Neither is the ram full, there's roughly 128Mb of that free.

*Would a bloody DEFRAG do something?

*What about zapping the Pram (and other placebos?)

*Should I just lay on the ground with a paper bag over my head or something?

As the iBook is in the shop, this is the only way I can really talk, so help would be much appreciated.

Suggestions

First up, try laying on the ground with a paper bag over your head. Then try a washing basket.

If that doesn't help, try pummeling the SE/30 about the head with a wet sock full of lime Jell-O.

If nothing makes any difference, you could try getting the SE so drunk it doesn't even know what an error message is- then you may have a chance of AIM working. Just force some Jack Daniels through any or all of its orifices, wait a few minutes and try the program again.

Good luck!

Try…

Re-downloading AIM, installing Netscape communicator (4.08 works on 68k macs and includes AIM) installing onto the other hard disk, installing to the same HD as the installer is on, er…

That's all I can think of right now…

Tried it all.

Downloaded it, moved it, emailed it to myself (the Binhex for the installer is ~3Mb, so it won't fit on a floppy)- and now, it gives me a "-50" error. Looking that up, it's apparently a user string configuration. . .??!! error.

On the plus side, I figured out how to use Google search on Wannabe
(it doesn't support text boxes).

Other fun error messages from AIM. . .

(Collect the whole series!!)

"-40 error"

"-50 error"

and the latest. . .

"An internal error (-50). . .file placement error. . .bus error (restart)"

Now, according to http://www-2.cs.cmu.edu/afs/cs/user/lenzo/html/mac_errors.html , -50 is a error in the user parameter list, -40 is "tried to position to before the start of file". . . I've downloaded and loaded about three different versions (including Pro, which says it requires 7.6)- what else could be the problem?

Wannabe... Google

Sorry to interject, but how do you get to use google with Wannabe, I would love to know! It is such a brilliant browser but as you say it doesn't have list boxes etc... I'd realy like to know how you do this...

For your aim problem I can't figure it out, but have you tried increasing the memory allocation?

Using Google on Wannabe

Here's how you use the Google Search string on wannabe:

Enter this into the address bar:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=What+You+Want+To+Search

That should do it. If not, let me know.
