Apple Shipping to Canada

Howdy All,

Thursday past I ordered a new 14" iBook from 1 800 MY APPLE (yay! I'm very excited!), and I have a few questions about shipping:

Apple said shipping was included, which is nice. However, they didn't say how long it's expected to take to ship to me (I'm in Canada). I did some poking around on FedEx's site, and they said it should take 1-4 business days to reach me (I'm in Calgary - a major urban centre, which helps things enormously). Does anyone know how long a shipment from Apple usually takes to reach Canada?

Secondly - and this just dawned on me - what about duties/taxes when the machine is brought into the country? Am I going to have to pay duty on the laptop? I got it using my education discount if that makes any difference :-P. I know Apple has a Canadian office in Ontario, and I think that makes a difference (IE: No taxes/duties), but I am not sure about that.

Anyone have any experience with bringing new gear from Apple across the border to Canada?

Cheers,

The Czar

depending...

on if the state the HQ is in (and apple considers its website home to) the state will put the charges on. I have seen websites that charge taxes if you are in one state and not another. and some that dont charge whether or not you are located in such and such an area. You would have to call apple's sales line and talk with a repressentative

Should ship from Canada

When I bought my Shuffle online, Apple sent me an invoice mentioning it was shipping from California. I got all bothered because I thought I was going to get hit with duty.

It really shipped from Markham, Ontario - with no duty of course - and I would suspect your 'book will be routed through there as well.

Your book will more than like

Your book will more than likely ship from TO to you. Apple Canada handles Apple sales inside of Canada. If Apple Canada doesn't have your selection in stock (not likely), you will receive it from Apple Canada when they get more in stock.

Your book won't be shipping from the U.S.

I called FedEx today, and they said the machine was coming from China. I don't know if that makes a difference in this situation.

Thanks for all the input!

I got my iBook yesterday at 1

I got my iBook yesterday at 10am local time. I didn't have to pay anything extra when I got it, so I'm assuming tax was built-in to the price. I'm quite happy with the machine, especially with 768MB RAM.

Just for future reference, generic PC RAM won't work in iBooks, but most Kingston RAM will.

So don't keep us all in suspense, where did it ship from?

Inquiring minds want to know. At least my inquiring mind does...

G5

I just ordered my dream machine (grad present, Dual 2Ghz G5) and dual monitors (20") from Apple.ca. I'm only 30 minutes away from the apple store on Yorkdale in TO, but apparently, my shipment is being handled by Purolator (?). Last time I ordered something, it was Fedex, and this shipment (monitors were shipped today) has a tracking number that doesn't work on Purolator's site. Purolator says that I have to call a phone number to get info. Is that normal?

My guess is that the entire machine, (2 20", G5) will arrive sometime within the next two weeks. I really should have just drove for 30 minutes to the apple store and bought it in person, but I'll see how this turns out.

Sorry for the delayed response.

The machine technically came from Shanghai, but the return address was Elk Grove, California. Same with my iPod mini that arrived yesterday :-P.
