Wow.

Today I got a computer from the dumpster at the apartment complex where my friend lives. When I powered it up, I was amazed to see that it was the computer from their office! It has all sorts of information, like drivers license numbers, social security info, previous adresses, bank and credit info, all sorts of stuff. Its scary to know that this kind of thing happens all over the place.

I used to have a Cyrix 486

I used to have a Cyrix 486 DX2 Computer with ISA and VESA?? (i think- cannot remember the exact name) slots. I remember the really long slot (VESA??) was used for the graphics card, and we had an ISA sound blaster card (which i still have to this day) for some weird reason.

Old School

Ah, vesa, what goodness. I remember when I was in high school, a teacher gave me a giant box of computer goodies. Mostly 486 boards, and corresponding accessories. The high point was the 486 dx2 66 with vesa. It had a vesa trident card, a vesa ide card, and what I found odd, a vesa scsi card. Along with microchannel and EISA, it's one of the old forgotten buses.

I also had an IBM PS/2 model 57slc. That was some goodness there, microchannel, onboard scsi, and a 75mhz Cyrix 486slc2. My parents still have that somewhere. It had the ultrarare microchannel soundblaster card. I ran OS/2 warp 3.0 on it. Good times.

This is slightly off topic, b

This is slightly off topic, but does anybody know of a way to look up cards/peripherals/etc by their FCC ID? A lot of the stuff in this system has no manufacturer info on it, but they all have their FCC numbers on them. Just wondering...

FCC numbers

Hey,

Silly as it sounds, have you tried Google? I vaguely remember searching FCC numbers there. Also, try the FCC website.

Good luck.

A Cyrix?

OMG, throw that thing away! Cyrix are the crappiest POS's i have ever seen. I owned a Packard bell from that era that had one of those. I went through 7 CPU's under the RMA. And I finally got replacement for it. I never went back to Cyrix. I'm glad that Cyrix finally died out of the market.

Gah! As long as you can stand to live in DOS 6.2 and Windows 3.1, that is.

DOS is the one thing that made me first try a Mac back in the early '90's, and I've only looked back to laugh.
