. . . with a RoadApple . . .

I started this hack on a lark a while back . . . then my 20" Radius "TV" began to croak and since I'm moving . . .

I've got this handy-dandy little POS monitor I use for bench work and troubleshooting and it always looked like it might . . . ALMOST . . . fit into an SE and I had this dead Classic laying around so . . . I was about to start chopping away with power tools and I fell in love with the utter simplicity of the sheet metal work in the chassis, so I slowed down, even though I've always detested the slotless classic as beneath even the much older SE's dignity . . . much less the SE/30's.

whatever . . . I've only used hand tools (and the cordless drill of course!) on this hack, just to show what can be accomplished with a plexi scorer, some hand saws, files and all the usual stuff hackers ought to have around. Dremels need not apply . . .

. . . except I broke down and used a hand held grinder on the sucker this morning to prune the mounting tabs of that CRT WAAAYYYYYYY back. . . and they now fit into slots I scored and whittled into the sides of the case. The CRT does protrude about 1.25" from the (mostly removed) back of the classic, but this is for utilitarian pursuits . . . and sofa spudding . . . besides, I've always got a couple of switchboxes and a pile of cables sitting on top of the lil' 10" Samsung, so they'll all go into a "backpack" sort of like like the old HDD's that Apple ripped the idea from for the plotline of the remake they did of the Hunchback of TAM.

I think I've got some piccies of the RoadApple installation on the iDisk or a photoCD already, so I'll edit some links into this post later.

Please respond to the *bump* initial post so I can fix my usual flurry of typos. HEH! :ebc: If we all cooperate in this lil' strategem, T.O.'s nefarious ineditability plottings will all have been for naught! HAR® Acute

I'll get some more piccies of this and the PB100 makeover in the morning . . . maybe.

piccies . . .

These aren't in order yet, they might be, if I get another chance to edit this. Wink

These are the innards of a ClassicPortrait donor in waiting, it's been in storage for several years since it was last used "for real."

If the box on the back of the CRT were a smidge smaller, it'd hide very nicely under a (gutted, obviously} GV-TP-Gold Modem box. It has great sculptural LED window protrusions and matched cooling slots on top, room for more I/O ports -n- a switch onna'side and actually has the perfect "platinum" Classic color scheme with a tastefully done gray logo. The perfect candidate for a CRT neck CheaterBox!

But this isn't intended to be pretty from the backside, so I'm gonna just bolt a Big@$$ HDD case or something equally inelegant onto the back for whackage protection . . . and to fill it with the KVM switcharoo goodies and losta other crap that I'll probably think of while I'm at it!

I think I'll save the GV-TP-Gold boxie and the GS-VGA portrait with the slim neckbox for the next poor unsuspecting Classic I find waiting at the curb on recycling day for the Big White MacMunchers of the DSNY.

OUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've just typed my left wrist into an RSI flare-up agan . . . so I'm posting a link to my MLA thread about this. I don't expect a totally utilitatian case hack to require a 'fritter write-up, so you can slog thru my prose about this hack over at the barracks if you're interested at all . . .

http://www.cinemafia.net/68kmla/viewtopic.php?p=6474#6474

Don't bother mentioning the Ugly@$$ tuschie treatment I've decided to go with for this, the case for is iron-clad, aesthetic sensibilities on the against side be dam . . . dratted!

HEH! :ebc:

If anybody has a link for, or a web archive of, the PC Mod we raked over the coals a looooooong time ago for doing this to a Mac, please post it in this thread. I'd dearly love to to get a chance to re-evaluate that modder's work now that I've . . . hacked about 487 yards of the way into this . . . in his shoes.

I'm looking forward to seeing

I'm looking forward to seeing pictures of its tushie!

Whatcha gonna use to blend the mated plastic bits together all over its cheeks, butt, etc.?

Heck, if you pull this off, It'll be good inspiration. I've considered putting a PB520 LCD in a classic, but it's too wide to fit without giving the classic 'ears' made from styrene and bondo (and the LCD's too small to go portrait). I abandoned the idea and got rid of the classic, but they're not too tough to track down around the local Value Villages.

I'll CHEAT! ;-)

Whatcha gonna use to blend the mated plastic bits together all over its cheeks, butt, etc.?

What'd you really EXPECT me to do, e! HEH! :ebc:
.
.
.
I'll eyeball the existing curved surfaces and then hack the crap outta' them with my trusty RYOBA! That'll create nice straight lines to coincide with the exsting flat surfaces on any PlatinumParts® within reach of my grubby lil' paws, silly! Acute

Right now I'm in the process of "developing lines" (IIRC, that's what they call it in the sheet metal layout manuals I've snagged over the years) to follow the wild intersections of the backside of the CRT in mating it with what's left of the reversed front bezel of the donor. This is intended to conserve as much of the original monitor plastica as possible to use its moulded mounting holes and the original screws. tRight now I've got it all slotted together just fine and there aren't any freakin' fasteners anywhere to attach the ground wires to the CRT mounting tabs . . .

OOPS!!! Blush

. . . and this way I can pretend I've always intended to create a drawer-face for a pulls-out-from-the-front CRT chassis/Original Classic sheet metal chassis/mobo drawer hybrid at the same time!

We used to call this "sculpture" back in college! Wink

I'm ALSO gonna cheat and fire up the Delta 14 for this process. There is just WAAAYYYYYYY too much inside surface hackage required to do this for me waste any of my time doing this part by hand . . . just to make a point I think I've already nailed down, anyway. HEH!

. . . very convenient the way the bottom surface of the (now chinless) CRT face bezel disappears completely to become a three sided thingie . . . so I can use the bandsaw cheat!

jt :ebc:

p.s. thanks for the kind words, eeun, it's been getting more than a little disheartening not to have anyone commenting on my hack threads.

p.p.s. tomlevens, check out the forums code buggage that culls double-spaced paragraph formatting like you'll find up at the placeholding periods above. Is this an emoticon code related bug?

Piccie(s) . . . sorta . . .

. . . here's a comparison shot of the
CRTs, parts and monocheek pulled out/tilted back as seen from front . . . then I ran out of film! =8-/

This is why I ran out, meet the TempestBenchMac_SE/30/P, it happened to be out on the bench when I started the shoot.

The stand-in with the RAD shield on the SE/30's bexel edging is Pooter, my original SE/Radius16 workstation. The modem boxie will probably cover up the hole/CRT neck projection, even if a modem on a Tempested Mac is sort of an oxymoronic appendage . . . or not . . .

view2 w/ rad shield waste.
TempestBenchMac's somewhat oversized CRT.

These two may be problematic, Mac.com seems to be having a problem deleting a bigf file . . .
CRT projection profile from top
Parts & bezel cutout waste

The 14" GS VGA monitor donor's CRT left exactly ZERO clearance on the sides and top and actually drops below the bezel's chin . . . since it's a BenchMac® . . . I CHEATED! =8-}

It's mission will be displaying DevNotes while I'm lookin' at the Service Manual on its fraternal 10" SVGA Classic BenchTwin and playing with hardware. In this application, looking like a butt-ugly/cool Tempest treated Mac isn't a problem. The hacked antiglare/radiation shield hides the dropped chin, the SE/30 tag will probably go onto a fake Tempested CD-ROM drive underneath the new jawline. What prompted me to do this was that ground lead, since the chassis will be well grounded, the clip lead from the rad shield will have a jack hacked on it for my grounding strap.

I hacked the shield back to almost no frame at all. If someone hadn't given it to me with a boatload of other toys, I couldn't have tried this with the DOA/30 and my old GS VGA monitor. The Wacom Tablet he gave me will probably be clipped to one side of the portrait/30 or Classic. A gravis joystick, a mini PS2 KBD/Mouse and their adapters will be clipped to the Classic's sides. I may even put the SE/30 MLB and GS/30 card in a ZFP HDD case with an SE/30/IIsi right angle PDS/ethernet card, dunno it'll work fine as a second monitor and peripheral rack.

Now I need another padded soft carryall bag, heh!

p.s. sorry no tuschie pics this time, eeun, but I got a slew of BabyPB makeover pics to post. Wink
