Who are these guys?

I'm new to this forum, and I asked this at another 68k Mac forum and never got an answer.

I have a Mac Classic that I bought off of Ebay, and where I'm well experienced with PCs, I'm still learning Mac.

When I boot into ROM and then check the "About Finder" it lists some names, one of them is Steve but I can't remember the rest. Are these the developers of the Macintosh or just what's in ROM?

Well it came with OS 7.0.1 on the hard drive (40 meg), and the disks. But I tried to re-intall the OS to make sure all was as it should be, and the Install2 disk is damaged.

And can someone PLEASE tell me what the fascination is I have for this little, underpowered, color chalenged computer?

your facination is that it's a classic mac, it's portable (not as heavy as normal macs) and it's a 68k mac capable of being a web server if you want it to.

you can download apple's older operating systems here

Thanks, I've been all over

Thanks,

I've been all over the web getting software for this thing.

What do I do with these HGX files? Some of them generate a bunch of script on the screen when I try to open them with Stuff-it Deluxe.

OK, here is how I get program

OK, here is how I get programs off the web.

I download programs on my PC (don't hate me). Then I use Apple File Exchange to transfer to the Mac. Then I open with Stuff it Deluxe. This works for about 60% of the programs I download. Any file I want to download has to be smaller than 1.44mb (to fit on the floppy). I think Stuff-it expander is larger than 1.44mb.

What amazes me is that Apple

What amazes me is that Apple had a system in play to transfer files from the PC. It makes me wish I could have afforded a Mac when I started in computers back in 1990.

.hqx is the suffix for the Apple-only binhex format. The other one that you will meet is .bin. Each has its moments of utility, depending on the age of the system and space constraints/download bandwidth. Some part of your problem of decoding them may lie in your not having access to contemporary versions of StuffIt Expander. Try this: http://rrzs42.uni-regensburg.de/Macintosh/files/macftp.html Otherwise, it sounds as if you are able to cope with any .sea and .sit files that you may meet.

The other utility that you will need at some point is Disk Copy 4.2 for making floppies from disk image (.img) files: http://download.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/English-North_American/Macintosh/Utilities/Disk_Copy/ If the image files are .smi files (self-mounting), you don't need Disk Copy.

Getting software for older Macs using Macs or PCs has been many times discussed in the Apple forums, and in particular, here: http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?14@557.zy2ka7poTkI.1197711@.ee6ba7c Look at the posts by Jan Hedlund, who explains it as cogently as anyone can.

I'd like to thank everyone for all of the information. I put that don't hate me in there because at another forum as soon as I mentioned I'm primarily a PC user no more questions seemed to get answered. I thought all of that PC/Mac hatred stuff ended shortly after it started. (Can't we all just get along?) (Get a long what, Rodney?)

Sorry, that was uncalled for.
