problems booting after os 10.2 install

hello i have been trying to install mac osx 10.2 on a beige G3 ALL-IN-ONE aka the molar mac. well i can boot just fine in to the installer and it seems like it installs just fine.once it is done finishing up the install it will restart normaly but it wont boot it goes to the happy mac face and reboots and will keep rebooting till i flip the main power switch in the back.i turn it back on and a white screen comes up and the words can't open write across the screen then goes into the happy mac face then starts rebooting again. the specs of my mac are G3 266mhz 128 mb ram 4 gig hdd 2 mb video ram and has the a/v personality card and the 10/100 base t pci nic card<---- this is the system i use to test stuff on befor i try it on this ALL-IN-ONE that i am useing to write this what could be wrong. the mac i use is the same but it has 224 mb ram 6 mb video ram and soon to havbe a 80 gig hdd. any help will be apreciated

are these origional os x disk

are these origional os x disks you are using? try holding down option+command (apple)+p+r, all at the same time right when you hear the boot up bong. wait untill it reboots about 3 or 4 times before letting the keys go.

the ones i got are the white

the ones i got are the white disk's with the jaguar colord X on them. i wasnt going to buy the grey disk's cause there might not work.but i am having that problem anyway yea i tryed to reset pram by hloding the command option p r keys, i tryed holding command option o f to get into the open firmware and typed set-defaults pressed enter and typed reset-all but still the same thing could a diying battary or dead battary cause this to happen
could the a/v card cause this to happen if so i dont have any other personality card's that dont have the optional a/v on it.i would love to know what settings every one used in the osx 10.2 installer.and if you used xpostfacto3 or 4 and what settings and what file system do you have to use a spasific file system like the unix file system or what

try going into open firmware

try going into open firmware an typing reset-nvram, enter it will say ok then type reset-all, enter. it will reboot and maybe boot. try pulling the a/v personality card out and booting without it, it will boot and get to the os x screen if it was the card but at the os x screen it will probably crash.

If you do that...

You will need an external monitor, as the Personality card on the AIO also puts out video to the internal screen

yea i know the a/v personality card outputs video to the internal screen its a rgb type connector. i wish i could do that i wish i had the normal personality card without the a/v input and output. i got a pc vga monitor but the monitor connector on the mac isnt the same is there any cheap converters that will work if so can some one point me in the right direction .

is there a way to update the open firmware v 2.0F! was that patch somthin i need that i linked to above do i need to format the hdd in a sertian way to get it to work like use the unix file system

instead of "reset-nvram".

sweet yea thanks init-nvram w

sweet yea thanks init-nvram works in the open firmware.now i wonder if that will get every thing to install right . if it dont boot right do i init-nvram again and reset-all .i wonser y once its done with the first disk it restarts like it should but it will never resume from there once it reboots it should boot into 10.2 and resume with disk 2 if im not mistaken and mine just has a white screen with can't open then it goes to the happy face and goes into its restarting fits its not supost to do that .im in the middle of trying to install again after i did the init-vram and reset-all.my mac's could just be retarded and wont install

re:problems booting after os 10.2 install

I just installed 10.2 on my AIO last night it also has an AV card. The problem I had was to get OS9 to boot on the second partition. I followed the instructions from this site.

i think my test mac has a dyi

i think my test mac has a dying pram battery and it might be whats causing the restarting problem.i bought a pram battery last night i dont know how long it will take to get here. once it does get here im going to put the new battery in my main mac and put the one that was in the main mac in the test mac .cause the battery in the main is ok.after i get the battery's switched around ill try to install osx on the test mac again.the hdd in both G3 AIO are only 4 gig .

but this time i did somthing diffrent i put 2 partitions on the hdd in the test mac. the first partition is reserved for 10.2 and i named the first partition osx10.2. the second partition is where i installed os 9.2.2 and works good but got to wait on power up till the floppy with the ? in it changes to the happy mac.

i think that is a symptom of a dying pram battery and the clock would never stay set..and prolly why when i get done installing with the first disk in osx and reboot it never does cause i think the open firmware doesnt get modified right to see the osx install

Yep, "init-nvram" just saved

Yep, "init-nvram" just saved one of my G3MTs from the endless "can'topencan'topen" at boot. Now to debug why X.2.8 won't boot after Software Updates.

do you think the pram battery

do you think the pram battery has any thing to do with this problem.cause i think the battery in the test mac it either dying or dead. i got os 9.2.2 installed on the second partition on a 4 gig hdd it will boot up but i have to press and hold command option shift delete at the start sound the it goes into the gray screen for a second with the ? floppy then the happy mac face then it boots up 9.2.2 if i didnt do that it would stay on the ? floppy a long time. its on running 9.2 right now on the floor behind me im just thinking on trying to install osx but also thinking it wont be of any use cause of the pram battery

I know the PRAM batterys are

I know the PRAM batterys are flat in my towers. I had X.2 running fine until I got it to install X.2.8. It booted fine with the X.2.8 update, but the next round of updates caused a hang when the SystemStarter launched (the GUI w/ the progress bar).

remember i got a 4gig hdd tha

remember i got a 4gig hdd that has been partitioned the first partition is 2 gig and the second partition is 2gig. OMG i just tryed to install osx 10.2 in the first partition now no matter what i do it wont stopp booting into os 9.2.2 i have even tryed xpostfacto to try to make it boot osx but still goes to os 9.2.2 i have even installed systems disk 2.3.1 to allow me to press and hold the option button to alow me to select what os i want to boot from then still boots to os.9.2.2 i dont know what else to try lol. could this be because the pram battery not having enuff power to hold the boot info over in the pram or open firmware or allowing the install or os to update the open firmware to make it boot to osx. well at least i know it will still boot to os 9.2.2

You don't need to partition a

You don't need to partition a 4gb hd, only a hdd over 8gb needs to be partitioned. I would try booting into an os 9.x disk and erasing your hdd so that there is one full 4gb partition, and then try installing os x.

i know that i didnt need to p

i know that i didnt need to partition the 4gig ,i just wanted to have the os 9.2 away from the osx install so partitioning was the best way to do this.the reason i did this was just in case the install messed up so i had somthing to boot into to try it again. i just think the pram battery is dead and wont update the pram and firmware to allow it to boot to another pertition

i think if i can find someone

i think if i can find someone that can tell me how to input the info into open firmware to make it see the partition and the file it needs to open then my problems would be solved .cause the can't open thing i get when it first boots up means open firmware is looking in the wrong place for the file it needs to open i found the info on this page http://www.netbsd.org/Ports/macppc/faq.html#cant-open
if only i can find out what i need to put in to O.F. then it would work
ok i used xpostfacto to see some hdd info not to use it just to see the hdd info i might need im trying to install mac osx 10.2 on ide1/@0:6 (i think its telling me that its useing ide channel 1 and partition 0:6

i have a g3aio and did the sa

i have a g3aio and did the same thing with jaguar. the first thing i did was actually use xpostfacto to load panther on. panther loaded fine except the pram always reset and the monitor would be very very dim each time i started up. dont know why. but at first, even with xpostfacto, i got that annoying white screen. i got around it by zapping the pram ( command option p r) it did nothing. i then just held the option key during the load and it all loaded fine. then made sure the startup disk was set to X. all was fine after that. but i hated the funky things with the monitor being so dim and having to go into monitor prefs to reset the brightness. plus you can not adjust the scren whatnots in X on the aio. or at least i couldnt. so i thought it was the xpostfacto. so i cleared all out and then did a fresh non xpostfacto load of jaguar. all the same problems. i dont think xpostfacto will solve much in your case. you will still get the white screen, and have to do all the keyboard magic and still end up with a sub-par osX. that is why i went back to 9. no partion issue either. btw, my G3AIO: G4 500/20gb/384mb/radeon 9200/zip/cdrw/floppy(partly why i wanted to stay 9 anyway). and all aio's were revision 2 roms. i just dont think X is best for g3aio's.

peace and love
ande

i guess the puts a damper on

i guess the puts a damper on things, i wonder why ox 10.2 was the last os to support the beige G3 but its like it dont have no support at all. i was going to put osx on one partition and os 9.2.2 on the second(only if i had an english verson of the os) i was going to do this any way even tho it needed to be partitioned or not. oh well i guess i wont be able to even run osx 10.2 on my beige G3 AIO this sucks well does any one have an english os 9.2 they could sell me.

*******UPDATE******** i am n

*******UPDATE********
i am now on my beige G3 AIO running mac os x 10.2 and running fine. all it was the jumper on the hdd was set to master that was the wrong with the jumper set to master was making it like there was 2 hdd but there wasent and in the list in the disk utility in the osx 10.2 installer was showing the cd rom drive first then the disk in the cd rom then the hdd then the 2 partitions that was why it wasnt booting.i took out the jumper in the hdd thanks to a friend on the apple descushion forums sudjust changeing the strap i didnt know what he was talking about then he asked what hdd i had i did then he posted a link teling me what to change all the strap is was the jumper and the diffrent settings on the hdd i looked and chose one to make it the firsk one i chose the single master type an it called for to remove the jumper that was all. now in the disk utility in the osx installer the drive list showed somthing diffrent the hdd was now first then the partition that i got 10.2 on then the partition i got 9.2 on then the cd rom drive then the disk thats in the cd rom drive
i knew then it was going to work now i am a happy camper thanks all for your help

Basically he told you that yo

Basically he told you that your HDD has a both a Master/Slave setting and a Single Drive Only setting? That can cause all sorts of headaches on any machine, Mac or PC.

yea your telling me. boy i wa

yea your telling me. boy i was about to give up i was pissed. but he came along and sudjusted that i changed the strap setting i was likw wtf is he talking about. then asked what hdd i was useing i told him he looked for the info . omg it was so simple im still thinking in the pc sorta things i was thinking you had to have the jumper on the drive either on master slave or cable select. i do know that if you have 2 drives on the same ide channel then you have to have them one set to master and the other to slave. i didnt even know there was a nertural or a single master drive setting so all i had to do was remove the jumper and it all works .its running 10.2 with no problems yea its going to be slugish cause the test mac only has a G3 266mhz and only 96mb ram and the stock 2mb vram it is just like my main beige G3 aio.but my main beige has 224mb ram and 6 vram.but man is safari fast i love the speed of it and i can even play runescape on it at www.runescape.com . the only thing i wish worked right is the front 2 ear phone jacks they do work but dont shut off the main speakers, the volume buttons on the front dont work and no support for the a/v card or the floppy drive. but thats why i still going to use os 9.2 all i have to do is select restart and hold the option and it loads os 9.2.2 when i want back into osx i just restart witch is nice hell yea i am a happy camper. oh and BTW is there any fix's for the stuff that isnt working or not working right
