B&W G3 on a Beige

Hello,

I just got myself a Blue+White G3 450MHz (Rev.B) and upgraded the cpu using a Sonnet Encore G4 500 Zif I had in a Beige G3 DT. The performance difference was great!

Anyway, I was wondering if there is a way to use the B&W CPU with the Beige as at the moment I am left withBeige with no CPU on it and the spare B+W g3 450 CPU. I know the bus speed is different on those machines (100fsb on the B+W) but I m still wondering whether a certain bus+multiplier combination would work. Anyone tried it before?

Thanks,

MacNewbie Smile

Though I don't know much abou

Though I don't know much about it, it is possible and often done. IIRC it just requires some jumper reconfiguration.

Here is a link that will help

Here is a link that will help:
http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/index.cfm?page=zif/beigejumpers.html

Use the 66MHz/33MHz/466MHz setting

You will need to remove the current jumper block and use large jumpers that are on desktop optical drives and all IDE hard drives...looks like you will need six. I may be able to find jumpers if you cannot find enough.

Thank you,
Chris

Thanks for your quick replies

Thanks for your quick replies Smile

I came across a similar diagram, I was just not quite sure whether to use the 66Mhz/33MHz/466MHz option or the 75Mhz/30MHz/450MHz one.

I suppose rising the fsb to 75MHz lowering the PCI bus speed by 3MHz could cause stability problems. I also wasn't sure if the CPU would run at 66MHz fsb as the B+W it came from ran on 100MHz fsb.

Anyway,

I'll have a look arround for spare jumpers and I'll let you know about my progress.

Thanks again!

I'd be able to mail you some

I'd be able to mail you some jumpers too, if you need any.

I have done something similair

As on this post :
G3 AIO Running at 280MHz

That was up from the original 233 that it was. Once I get to my Laptop, I will post the page that aladds told me to check out.

here it is:
http://www.wmld.com/tech/jumperchart2.html

EDIT: BTW, my G3 is running with a 35MHz PCI, with 2.0x multiplier for the FSB (which comes to 70MHz) and the CPU is set on 4x Multiplier IIRC. It runs OS X sooo smoothly.

Also, IIRC, the G3 B&W was kinda based off of the same design as the Beige, with a few controllers and FW, and a faster FSB standard. I mean, you can throw a B&W CPU into a beige with no problems, as long as you have it configured correctly.

well ive got my 350mhz from m

well ive got my 350mhz from my b&w in my AIO, it works awsome. i havn't tried overclocking, but i did use the jumper block from my b&w. ive racked up some hours running it too. no fan mods or heatsink mods. it is however VERY picky about ram, but what mac isnt?

You can always run a G3 Zif a

You can always run a G3 Zif at a lower FSB speed than the cpu is rated but running it faster than the rated speed can cause instabilities

I've got a B&W 350mhz zif in

I've got a B&W 350mhz zif in a beige doing 366mhz hapily on the 66bus. I used to have a 233 beige kicked up to 292mhz and with the bus kicked up to 80mhz with never any apparent instabilities.

Oh, and by the way, you can't put one of the 233 or 266 mhz zifs into a B&W. They won't be recognized. B&W's require at least 300mhz.

I put a 466MHz G4 ZIF module

I put a 466MHz G4 ZIF module into a beige G3 and it worked fine. I had to change the CPU multipliers to work with the slower bus speed. Also in OS9 I had to download the powerlogix control panel to make the L2 cache work. Never tried it with OSX.

that G4 zif was made for that

that G4 zif was made for that reason to put in a beige , B&W , YIKES Mac
cause all three systems took the same type of cpu zif socket
