Atto SiliconExpress IV formatting software.

Apologies for the spray of questions I've been asking around the forums - I've had so much new old hardware come in to play with it's just been a jump from one machine to another to another, trying out all the stuff I couldn't before :). Thankfully I've been able to get a IIsi and a 10/100 NuBus card up and working with help from y'all here.

Now for the next one... I have an ATTO SiliconExpress IV I hadn't been able to use before, simply because I didn't have the drives & cables to use on it. Now it's in a 7100 attached to an IBM 9 GB 68 pin SCSI drive - 7200RPM, not that noisy, and giving 7-9MB/sec according to ATTO's own performance utility. At the moment it's formatted as it came in one single large partition, and as I understand it from reading old newsgroup postings found via google groups it won't work as a boot drive unless I have a boot partition under 2GB in size.

The problem I have is I want it to work as a boot drive, so I need to partition it but can't find the software to do so. ATTO's site doesn't look to contain any of the old NuBus software it used to, although I did download some of it when I first obtained the card several years ago. I'm kicking myself now that I didn't go through and nab everything on offer. Another google groups post recommended that Charismac's Anubis does a fine job of supporting the SEIV, but the download for it on macupdate.com ( http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/5127 ) goes to an IP address that fails to connect for me. Anyone have any hints to get me on my way, perhaps someone with ATTO's own NuBus mac formatting utility, if one exists.

Thanks again,
dana

I found what I was after - ar

I found what I was after - archived away was an old APS Powertools that recognised the SEIV, partitioned it, and let me install an OS.

Unfortunately it seems the 7100 itself is having trouble staying up long enough to boot now, with constant bus errors, lockups, etc even with all nubus cards out, RAM and PSU changed and the old HD back in. always the way!

okey dokey, but if you can use it, . . .

I dug up an SE4 fileset, which includes these:

  • SiliconExpress (an app)
  • A/V Utility ƒ
  • Updater Utility ƒ
  • Performance Utility ƒ
  • Startup Item ƒ

Also, ATTO does have a downloadable (requires *free* registration) utility, ExpressPro Tools, though I'm not sure of its system/OS requirements.

Ta for the download once agai

Ta for the download once again - that SE4 fileset is very similar to the one I had - and its performance utility doesn't crash after it's done a test of the drive's speed. ATTO's downloadable ExpressProTools utility is, unfortunately, for the PCI versions only.

The fact I could even try the performance utility means yes, I do have the system up and running again. The 7100 only needed a bit of a clean - http://www.danamania.com/temp/7100clean.jpg and http://www.danamania.com/temp/7100clean2.jpg - after that it's happy to boot and stay booted, allowing me to install 8.1 on the Atto 2GB partition, which then works as a boot drive.

I had a little worry when an hour into using it with all the cards in I started getting graphical artifacts followed by a crash, but I think that's a temperature thing. I didn't notice when I first put the cards in that the G3 heatsink was pressed up right against the 24AC. http://www.danamania.com/temp/romheatsink.jpg

Nothing a little reorganising won't fix.

Thanks again,
Dana
