iPod Shuffle Will Not Mount

Hey Folks -

The other day, my iPod shuffle refused to mount on my Powerbook. The USB ports on the 'book work fine with an external hard drive, so I think they're ok.

Currently it will play, and all controls on the shuffle work, but it will not charge off of the Powerbook (12" G4 1.5), nor will it show up in iTunes or Disk Utility. The light on the shuffle does flash green briefly when it's hooked onto a USB port. No other lights showed when hooked up (the disk use light should show).

The shuffle itself is a 1gig model purchased just after their release.

I expect I'll have to break it open to have a look. Does anyone know a 'safe' way to open these?

I think I feel a hack coming on...

iPod restore utility doesn't

iPod restore utility doesn't recognize when the shuffle is plugged in. I'll track down another machine to give the shuffle a try in tonight, but I'm playing poor university kid at the moment, so I've only got my laptop here. Don't know where I'd find another Mac about...

Eeun, that's great! I saw the take apart where they butchered the controls, but not this one.

Provided that it isn't recognized on another machine, when I take it apart I might try the fabric-dye-on-plastic trick to the casing while it's out.

And that ladies and gentlemen

And that ladies and gentlemen, is how you brick a shuffle!

Followed the hackaday steps, but it wasn't sliding out in any manner, let alone easily. I tried to apply pressure with the pen while pulling a bit from the other side to see if that'd help and and I snapped the ribbon cable.

Now if only I could figure out where I put my other flash player...

Never understood why people get my nick wrong so often. I should really just change it to my proper name.

Anyhow, I'm a software guy. I don't give hardware repair advice. I just make sure this place keeps running so you can get it.
