personal file sharing not starting

i'm running a G5 with OS X 10.4.5, latest and greatest updates. everytime i try to start the personal file sharing, it is starting but stops immediately afterwards. this has also happened to a friend of mine a couple of weeks ago, on a G4 with 10.4.2. the problem disappeared on his machine after a few days without any notice...

any ideas where this is coming from? and how to solve it?

regards, chris

pfsns update

steps done so far:

1) repaired permissions and hdd using disk util
2) trashed several preferences
3) removed startup items
4) removed login items

and last but not least:

5) did a hardware check (was running the whole monday from 8am when i arrived at work until 6pm), hardware seems to be ok.

no effects at all. hm...

try a different account

Sorry, I haven't got a clue on the specific issue, but here's a good general OS X troubleshooting tactic - Log into a different account (create one if you don't have one already.) This helps narrow down where the problem lies.

Start file sharing. If it now works you've got a problem with the first account, if it doesn't you've got a system-wide issue.

...on that machine, i could try that. but as lucky as i am, i only have the admin account - thats it. can i log in as root user, even if i didn't enable it before through netinfo manager in OSX?

btw, already tried zapping pram and resetting pmu... Wink

thanks,
chris

re: i only have the admin account

If you have an admin account you can create new accounts:

system prefs-> Accounts: in the lower left you'll see [+], hit that and create a new user account.

guess i didn't make myself clear...

as i dont hav eany possibility do login, as the mac gets stuck before the initial screen, i'm a bit stuck here.

well, as i was in a bit of a hurry, i just backed up all data through target disk mode and reinstalled the whole machine.

thanks a lot though for your help!
