After having a poke about in my iBook I think I've found the source of my backlight problems! I'm guessing that blob of burnt metal shouldn't be a blob of burnt metal
Any ideas guys?

Warranty?
That ran out about a week before it broke ::)

Let me guess, this is a 1.0 ghz 12" iBook. I've seen this before. It's quite rare. I'd put your machine back together, call Applecare and explain that you saw smoke come out of your computer prior to the backlight issue popping up. They will step up and take care of this.
Even if it's more than a year out of warranty? I've been using it for the past year with an external monitor... I just finally got around to taking a look now. But yeah you're right, 1.0GHz 12".

Considering that the iBook G4 isn't known for having the sturdiest of logic boards, Apple will likely be willing to work with you. Even though it's been out of warranty for a while, I'm sure that they'll be well motivated to help you out. Mention the smoke (when this happens there is usually a fair amount of smoke and a nasty burnt plastics smell that comes with it), and smell, and you should be fine. This IS a product issue in my professional opinion. Give it a whirl.
OK it's worth a shot I suppose!

The worst they'll do is say no, or offer to charge you $700 for a mobo... j/k
Does anybody have an iBook G4 12" handy that could snap a piccie of the motherboard. I'm gonna try and work out if that part is replaceable. If it's anything like the one next to it then it shouldn't be a problem to replace. But if anyone could get a part number or suchlike it would make my life a lot easier.
Also, any ideas about the best way to clean the burn marks off the motherboard?
TOM
OK, I've got some motherboard scans from iantm... however I can't make out a part number on the component. It looks the same as the one next to it, but is there any way to identify it?
TOM
Anybody?
TOM
Hi Tom,
Can you please post these scans (or email them to me?) I'll pass them on to some friends of mine who do PCB design/rework and see if they have any suggestions.
I've attached them to the original post.

Moved to Hardware Repair Help... but surely somebody must have an idea!
