Full FTP access via Finder

I usually don't use the finder to access FTP Server, but since it's a built in feature, I was wondering whether there's a way to use all the FTP features with the finder. Afaik the Finder's FTP is read-only, i.e. I can dl data from a server, but I can't upload. Is there a way to change that? A workaround of some kind?

I don't think so...

I looked into this a while back -- was wanting to edit some web pages by connecting via ftp through the Finder & using a free text editor to do the job -- but wasn't able to come up with anything. That was about the same time Bare Bones made TextWrangler -- which has built-in ftp capabilities -- a freebie, so that ended up solving my problem.

Since then I bought Fetch because the need for using SFTP to transfer graphics & mp3's came up, and am VERY happy with that. There are other shareware clients out there, and a few free ones, but Fetch is well worth the $25 they ask for it.

If you're comfortable on the command line, OS X has 'ftp' available via the shell prompt.

I am usually using Transmit and I'm happy with it. I just wanted to know whether there's any know way to use the Finder's FTP "Client" with full access.

Finder FTP weirdness

I was unaware that the Finder couldn't uploud to an anonymous ftp mount if the mount wasn't read only. But I did discover some weirdness recently.

When connected to Mozilla's nightly Firefox ftp thingy,

Most recent Firefox Builds

the Finder doesn't show anything there, just an empty mount (obviously... Mozilla isn't providing the necessary resource forks on their ftp site). If you use Firefox itself to get there, there's lots of stuff.

Also, if you mount in the Finder, but then navigate there with the Terminal (/Volumes/ftp.mozilla.org), ls shows what's there. I'm wondering now if the Finder's functionality with ftp mounts is available on the command line after mounting in the finder.

Anyone have an anonymous ftp site that isn't read only?

I checked this one. It would have been nice if it worked...
