INSTALL UBUNTU 5.10 ON G3 400MHZ

HI!

I have power pc with the following specifications:

CPU: PowerPC G3, 400Mhz
Ram: 128MB
HDD: 12GB

I will install Ubuntu 5.10 and I have the original Ubuntu CD.
OS that this system has is iMac 9.2, but I will remove it permanently and I'd like to have Ubuntu on this system.

Unfortunately Ubuntu Cd doesn't boot after restarting.
Can anybody help me?
Waiting for your reply.

Rgds,
Sharareh

The issue really depends on e

The issue really depends on exactly WHICH G3 you have. Is it the B&W G3 tower, or an older Beige G3 (with an upgraded CPU), a Beige PCI PowerMac (with an upgraded CPU), an iMac, or an iBook, or a PowerBook G3 (Lombard/101)? If it's anything other than a Beige, then it should boot from the CD. Some older Macs do have trouble booting from CDs that have been burned at high speeds.

Also, did you hold down c when booting?

Ok, good. Now, is it a burne

Ok, good. Now, is it a burned CD or one that Ubuntu sent through ShipIt? Sometimes people get a bad burn or don't burn it right.

Since it is a 400MHz, it shou

Since it is a 400MHz, it should a be a slotloading drive, which also means that is supports the Starup Manger. To use it, boot by holding Option when you hear the chimes, and before they end. (as should be done when trying to boot from CD by holding c) If the CD is in the drive and bootable it will come up as one of the icons in the Startup Manager screen. It may take a while for the iMac to let you make a choice, as it also tries to probe the network for an available network share to boot from. If the iMac sees your Ubuntu CD as bootable, it'll show it as a CD icon witha little penguin on it.

Also, to be sure, you are trying the PPC Ubuntu CDs, and NOT the x86 ones? Wink

That's a good idea. You can

That's a good idea. You can download and burn a copy too, if you have a highspeed connection. If you are willing to wait a bit longer, the Dapper Drake 6.04 release should be out sometime next month.
