iMac Logic Board

Hi,

I have a 500mhz indigo g3 imac and i am wanting to upgrade the logic board to a 600mhz or 700mhz one with 16mb vram as opposed to 8. Are the 500/600/700mhz imac logic boards interchangable? and would i have to discharge the crt or take any other safety precautions whilst switching the boards? because to be honest, i dont have the bottle to discharge a crt by myself. too many volts! and i dont have the tools either. any help would be much appreciated :]

thanks

Jon

I'm not positive about mobo c

I'm not positive about mobo compatibility, though they did move the CPU and heatsink around on the latter models. As for doing the swap, you will not be exposed to the CRT at all. You simply remove the bottom cover, and remove the perforated RF sheild. Then you cna unscrew and remove the mobo + DCB (they are attached with a socket, and clip, and a nylon clip thing)

I'm betting that you might run into the heatsink problem, and to change it out, you'd probably be into so much disassembly of both iMacs to move over the plate that the mobo screws into, that you should just buy and use a working 600-700 anyway. Wink

Look at Service Manuals

Download the Service Manuals of each iMac & look at info.

Hmm...

My model and the 600/700mhz one share the same service manual. I cant download them until saturday because im on crappy dial-up, so I will have to wait. but there is a 700mhz logic board on ebay crying out to me "Buy Meeeee!"

yes

Been there, done that. See this thread.

I'm not sure about your heatsink though, as it may not be so easily amenable to moving about. I had the idea that the later sink is a pressed 'dimple' in the 'plate' between the MLB and the AB. If so, it may not be worth the bother, you need to pret' near disassemble the entire unit to swap that out.
