800x600

Anybody done the VGA hack and successfully using 800x600 resolution? I've heard that it's too tiny and too fuzzy, but I've only heard from one person that's tried it.

From what I've heard about it

From what I've heard about it, the geometry either becomes unadjustable or the display loses convergence. I think 800x600 on a 9" CRT would definately be pushing boundaries of legibility.

I tried it. Geometry impossible to get at all decent, and text needed enlarging to be readablem which kinda defeats the whole purpose! A 800 x 600 LCD might be OK, though!

I tried it too. I got the 64

I tried it too. I got the 640x480 to work on the CC and then i saw the 800x600 option. I was intent on getting it to work, but just couldnt get the adjustments right to have it reasonable.

It works, just not nice enough to use

What exactly was impossible? Was it distorted, skewed, unmaximized? (Sorry I don't know the technical terms.) How/where do you adjust the video characteristics on the CC? With my SE/30 I know there were some dials reachable with a (plastic) screwdriver once the case was removed.

I guess I don't mind adjusting text size upwards - if it made the UI elements (chrome, icons, etc) smaller, that would be a benefit. After using 1152x864 resolution (and larger) for awhile, sometimes I wonder how we coped with 640x480. But 640x480 is definitely better than 512x384! Too bad that you can't specify arbitrary 4Yx3Y geometries. Eking out 700x525 would be cool.

"Impossible"

You adjust using the pots on the rear of the a/b, as detailed in numerous screen upgrade sites.

As I recall, the top 10% was skewed badly, it was impossible to keep convergence of the 3 colour guns and even when those two factor weren't an issue, the CRT just couldn't handle the resolution - just not pin-sharp whatever you did.

This is a screenshot of my attempt. That was the best I could do- useable but the geometry is out of proportion.

Pretty close! At least it wa

Pretty close! At least it was just compressed, and not skewed or otherwise distorted.
