Sound in won't work on Performa?

Having recently acquired a Performa 6360 (which I intend to (ahem) "pimp out", yo,) I attempted to use the included modem and MegaPhone software to call someone. And so I did.

The Microphone port doesn't work. Now I knew that Apple Plaintalk mics were different, but this wasn't a problem with any of my previous Powerbooks (145, 170). I spent over three hours tonight trying to rewire the mic to make it work, because it seems the common ground and the "positive" input (should that be negative?) are in the wrong places.

Any ideas?

Because it's got a PlainTalk

Because it's got a PlainTalk mic port. http://lowendmac.com/ppc/6360.shtml
And Omni mics use a very different signal level. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=15884

Here's what throws me off though...

"When using a third party microphone a standard 3.5 mm mini-plug may be used as the input plug. The added length of the Apple PlainTalk Microphone jack connects the jack to a power source for the amplification. "

The line you quoted above may

The line you quoted above may refer only to third-party self-powered microphones. Nothing in the TIL article claims mic-level input on Macs that shipped with the powered Plaintalk mic, unfortunately. Line-level would seem to be as low a signal leverl as the port supports.
