Networking an Epson printer via in-printer network card

This issue goes to configuration.

I have an Epson Stylus 900G printer. I installed an Epson network card into the printer. I want to make it available on my network, but it does not want to make my life easy. The card has a black button on it which is not a reset button as I hoped. When pressed, it does provide some helpful information.

When pressed the button makes the printer produce two pages of setting and good info on the printer status/configuration as follows:
General Info
Card Type - Epson Type-B 10Base-t/100Base-TX Print Server
Serial number - (blah-blah-blah)
MAC Address - 00:00:48:B3:6F:33

Ignorance of the ... sections and laziness caused me to omit the details there, but if they are truly significant, I can provide them.

This printer is connected to the Ethernet port of my iBook and is not discoverable in Network Neighborhood, and the following EPSON Net! Mac utilities: Epson MacAssist (causes iBook to freeze/crash); Epson Net!2; Epson Net!3) and Epson Namer. The appropriate driver has been installed and the printer icon can be found in the Chooser (I installed for the 800, 850, and the 900 - both USB and network). when I chose any of the network options, the printer is not found. Use of the IPP URL fails as a connection times out. The behavior is the same when connected to my network hub.

The printer does work and can be used when connected via USB and selected in Chooser.

How can I connect to the printer via the Ethernet card and alter its configuration? Information on Epsons site eludes me and my inexperience on networking stymies me.

TIA

Try opening a Web browser to

Try opening a Web browser to the IP address it reports -- it probably has a Web-based config utility. If that doesn't work, try Telnetting into that IP (that's how I have to configure my HP JetDirect box).

okay...

...how do I telnet? I am running 9.2.2. I do not know where to begin with this kind of task. It is okay to treat me like a moron on any networking related questions as I really have no clue at this time.

It's easier to use an OS X machine. Open Terminal, then type "telnet [IP address you want to telnet to]". If the network card accepts telnet communication, it should in the very least spit back some kind of greeting (e.g. "Epson Network Adapter blah blah blah").

What's the model of card you're trying to use?

won't telnet

I tried the telnet on an OS X machine. the connection timed out, the physical connection is good.

the card is an "Epson TypeB Ethernet I/F Card". when triggered to print its status, it identifies as an Epson Type-B 10Base-T/100Base-TX Print Server".

Is it an internal card? If so

Is it an internal card? If so, here's where you can get the documentation for it:

yes

yes it is internal - I installed it myself. The manual helped as it gave me instructions on resetting the card to defaults, which did reassign the printer name, but the version of MacAssist Net! that I have and what the book describes seem to vary slightly. While I cannot see the printer in Chooser on 9, I can see it in Print Utility on X.

We are getting there. I need a few days off to put the needed time into reading the manual and then tracking down the correct version of the configuration utility in order to make any real head way.

Thanks!

Closer, but not there yet...

Alright, that helped a bit as I have determined that the Net! Assist utility I was using was the wrong version. I downloaded the OS X version and was able to change the config settings from my wife's OS X Mac.

-- However, I still cannot do this from my main machine, which runs 9.2.2. The verion of Net! Assist I found appears to be the right one, but the printer is not findable on the network from the utility. Also, since the printer is connected to my network and usable from my wife's machine, I am further perplexed by the fact that the printer is not usable in Chooser on my machine. When I go to Chooser, I have the option for the printer - (being USB) and for the printer(AT) - (being networked). I am positive that I have the right drivers installed on my mac. AppleTalk is setup right on my Mac and the printer's AppleTalk option is enabled, set to zone "*".

Is this relevant?

...AppleTalk is setup right on my Mac and the printer's AppleTalk option is enabled, set to zone "*"...

Just noticed that the Appletalk network number on the printer and on my Mac do not match. Some one school me on this...
