Apple PowerBook 165c-170 drive problems

I recently picked up 2 laptops from a computer recyclers. One is a Macintosh PowerBook 170, and the other is 165c. I found a power supply and booted both laptops. Everything worked fine.
While I was searching through the hard drive, I thought I would plug one of the batterys in the computer to charge it. When I inserted the battery the computer went off. And if that was not bad enough, I picked the other laptop up and did the same thing.
After I pulled the battery out, I restarted both laptops and all I get is a 3.5" disk on the screen with a question mark.
I have the system disks for the 165c, and when I install them they say cannot find a SCSI device. But it works fine off of disks.
What did I do to the hard drives by plugging a battery in while they were on? Is there a fix for this problem?

I have had a similar problem

I have had a similar problem with my PB180.

To fix it, I boot off my Disk Tools floppy, and run Apple HD SC Setup, then tell it to either update the disks driver, or test the drive.

Doing one of those two things usually mounts the hard drive, and I can then restart and boot from the hard drive.

Hmmm, can you boot off a flop

Hmmm, can you boot off a floppy and maybe mount an external HardDrive with a better disk utility on it? Such as MicroNet Disk Utility or FBW HardDisk ToolKit.
