G3 Mini-tower Wings card software - does any exist?

I've recently dropped the AV card (Wings) into my G3 tower - does any video capture software exist for it at all? My first step was Apple Video Player... but that didn't see it. The only option it gives is the one for MPEG video playback. Any suggestions?

** One thing that does work however... if booting to OS 9, and a TV is attached to the Wings card... you are greeted with MacOS on your TV Smile

Specs of my Mac:

Beige G3 Mini Tower
Rev C ROM
Adaptec(Powerdomain) 2940U2B SCSI Card (gives out 80MB/second)
2x 18GB, 1x 9GB Wide SCSI Hard drives
Stock Apple CD-ROM (the CD-RW drive I do have kills my OS 9 startup).
768mb RAM
ATI Radeon 7000 64MB
USB Card
4mb m'board VRAM updrage DIMM
G3 300Mhz clocked up to 333
Dual booting OS 9.2.2 and Panther

The ATI Xclaim video player i

The ATI Xclaim video player is a decent video capture in OS 9. See this thread:
http://www.applefritter.com/node/20068
I'm not sure if you have to have the Xclaim TV box as an interface to the Wings in order for it to work. The video capture ability of the Wings doesn't work at all in OS X, I believe.

Really?

Hey,

I have a Beige G3 pumped up to G4 with an AV wings card. In fact, I'm watching "Contact" via Apple Video Player (AVP)on my MultiSync as I'm writing this. Usually I watch VHS tapes on a VCR connected to the wings card. The G4 accelerator is irrelevant to the performance of the wings card. AVP will capture video but the quality is iffy. You may want to: reseat the card, diddle da cuda, zap the pram, or reinstall AVP. It really works. Really.

I've found that these things can be finnicky.

Curiously, if you install the OS while the audio-only card is installed, then install the AV card, the AV card will probably be unrecognized. If nothing else suggested works, try an OS reinstall.

no it should get reconizd jus

no it should get reconizd just fine, you just might need to manualy install the extensions for some app's and then again you might not.

but the system should detect the wings card with no problem even if you installed the OS with the wisper card in it.

That directly contradicts my experience.

Maybe it _should_ work that way, but it doesn't always.

I actually suspect this is a function of QuickTime. There is a gestalt selector that indicates which AV hardware is present, and I _think_ it is posted by QT.

that could be. isnt there a w

that could be. isnt there a way to reinstall QT or delete a prefrence for QT perhase. who knows. i never had a wisper card only wings. i just figured it was part of the OS itself that detemins what card it is.

i know if you open ASP look under hardware overview and look at Attributes it will show Audio/Video card or other.

the simple thing is that not all the proper extensions got installed. he was mainly looking at apple video player which requires the video startup extension in order for him to use it with video input.

another thing before you start apple video player you have to see in the control strip on the right side on the volume control there is a little button with a Mic and CD on it click it and you have to select RCA in to be able to get sound threw apple video player if your inputing it before you open apple video player.

and once again alk you misread my post nothing i said contradicted your experiance. you just might have not taken the proper steps to get everything to work.

Confirmations

I'll get around to trying all these suggestions out sometime - but I do have some confirmations of some of the things mentioned that I have already checked.

Apple Video Player - the extension is a pre-requisite to start it, but I still only get the MPEG playback option

Sound control panel - all the various inputs/outputs appear for Wings

ASP - Confirms card existance as "Audio/Video card"

The install was a fresh 9.0.4 then all the updates to 9.2.2 - maybe I need the G3 specific extensions.... (my G3 was an Ebay special).

I've tried various video-capture apps for OS9 (aside from this BTV thing) but none of them see Wings whatsoever.

So you've tried hooking up a

So you've tried hooking up a VCR or camera to the wings through the composite or s-video input ports and tried to access them through Apple Video Player and there's nothing? It shows no camera or video input available? If so, that sounds familiar. I think I had that problem on my 6500. If I remember, there were problems with Apple Video Player in OS 9. It was designed before 9 and wasn't fixed for 9 or something like that. Do you have a harddrive you could install 8.6 on, or even 8 or 7.6? See if everything works ok with one of those earlier OS's, and if it does, upgrade that OS to 9 and see if it works then. I think that's what I did with my 6500. I just ended up keeping it at 8.6.

You tried the ATI Xclaim Video Player and it also doesn't recognize the Wings inputs? The simple solution then is to get one of the Xclaim TV boxes. They're also breakout boxes with S-video and composite. The Wings was designed to work with it since the onboard video chip in the Beige is ATI Rage Pro or Rage II. The Xclaim Video Player will work with that setup and it's a much better player and capture software the the AVP. If no one else here has one to sell you, the boxes turn up on eBay:
http://search.ebay.com/xclaim_W0QQfromZR7QQfsooZ2QQfsopZ2
I don't see any there in the auctions right now, but when you scroll down to the stores there's a couple of overpriced ones there. I think they usually sell for around $10-$15 on the auctions, and often less. I saw one sell for $2 one time. Make sure it comes with the cable if you buy one. It requires a special S-video cable with special pinouts that sells with it.

Another option is to abandon the Wings and get one of the other available input boxes like the Formac Studio firewire box.

But if you get the AVP working, you can also hook up an Apple IR remote to the Wings if you have the IR connector on your Wings card. I just recently posted a thread about it here:

Never a problem in OS9 . . .

Hey,

I've never had a single problem with AVP and OS 9 on my Beige. At least not technically. I sometimes have to sit through some dog bad flicks but I've never, ever, ever had to stop watching because of software glitches. And this is on a G4 Beige, a nasty little beast when it gets in a mood, if ya know what I mean.

Ins and outs

I used to own a black PowerMac 5500 that had all the video input gubbins - that fired up AVP quite happily with all available options, even with nothing attached.

I've even tried demos of at least 3 versions of Adobe Premier, but none see Wings at all.

I've got a disk I could drop 8.6 onto... might give that one a go...it's from an iMac restore disc but pretty generic methinks, as it installs things like AVP and other bits iMacs don't have... like the older printer drivers (non-USB, and non-Appletalk).

I don't think Wings needs a specific extension loaded, as it will quite happily output to the TV via S-Video from power-on, with no other displays attached. The other interesting thing, is I can find very little about the Wings card on Apple's knowledgebase. That or I'm looking in the wrong place on there.

Yea i use my wings card in my

Yea i use my wings card in my AIO to play my XBOX threw and my digital cable box threw cause i have no tv in my room. i have never had any problems with my card or AVP in OS 9.2.2 yet. make sure you are hooking the cables into the input if you want to input video and sound into the machine. its very easy to do, i done it once before i looked to see it said in and out.

another thing you could look at is you got a lemon wings card or got fried some how. or is not properly seated, they are known not to work right if its the least bit miss seated. try pulling it out and firmly pressing back into place. but not to hard cause you can destroy the card it pressed to hard.

when these cards are not seated properly you can have problems using some functions of it , or the system is real unstable, or it just wont boot up. these systems are known to be shipped (when they was new) from apple with miss aligned cards and would not boot or work properly. sometimes bending the metal tab that connects to the case up a bit allowing the card to fit more snugly in the slot.

if it still don't work, it would sound to me like you have a halfway dead wings card. since you reinstalled the OS and made sure all the extensions are there and still no go. the only way now is to do what i said above about re-seating the card.

just as a test i would enable the RCA in wile booted in OS 9 and hook a sound source in to the sound inputs to see if any sound is coming threw. you should be able to do this without running any app's. but you do have to make sure that you select the rca in before you can hear anything.

good luck on getting it working

RCA in works (for audio at least) - found a good object to test Wings with.... Playstation 2 Wink

Audio works fine - I just can't get any video-in to work.

I downloaded BTV - it complains it can't initialise the video-in source. Avid Video doesn't see it either - same with Adobe Premier. AVP just comes up with the MPEG playback option - but it does set the input source to RCA-in... just no way of making use of the other features I know it has.

Did you get a chance to try i

Did you get a chance to try it with OS 8.6?

Does your Wings card have the IR connector and TV tuner connector on it like the one on powersurge's site? Click on "Apple TV Tuner in a Beige G3" in the upper left corner on his homepage here:
http://www.geocities.com/pm9600g4/index2.html
If so, I think that would indicate it is one of the early Wings cards for the Rev.A ROM Beige G3. Maybe the early Wings have problems with AVP in OS 9. Just a thought off the top of my head.

So have you tried (re)install

So have you tried (re)installing QuickTime? QT is responsible for identifying to all applications that you have an analog video input source on your Mac. If you can't get AVP to recognize the video source, BTV won't see it either. Both rely on QT to find it for them...

This might not help you. I lost my first Wings card in a lightning storm some years ago. To this day, the audio in/out works fine, and AVP and all the other AV tools recognize the video in/out, but the video in is dead as a doornail. No image comes through whatsoever. Anyway, that probably doesn't help. It's not the same problem you have. But if reinstalling QT or Mac OS doesn't solve the problem, it's probably time to find a new Wings card.

Peace,
Drew

Avid Express

I Have Avid Express in a zip file (i got the CD, but the CD is scratched to hell) but it recognizes the Wings card perfectly. It's the same CD that shipped with the older 6x00/5x00 Machines with built-in Video in/out. It will see video in, and will record. Works excellent with video compression Smile
