setting mystic up for internet

I have a great little black mystic w/128mb ram all decked out and just can't seem to get it to connect to the internet. I have both an ethernet card and a com. slot card. I'm using OS 8 and connecting thru a linksys router with two PC's. Can someone tell me how to go about using the internet connection setting helper (what to put where and what choices to make) so I can sell my thinkpad and join the wonderful world of Mac's again?

All help appreciated!

setting up mystic for internet

Well! After nearly two years of trying to get this mac on the internet I finally succeded. My problem has something to do with the lynksys router. I unpluged the router/hub and went directly from my cable modem to a old Encore ESH-709 8 port mini hub and presto, I was connected. I haven't figured out if the linksys is too fast for my mystic or if it's just not configured right on the host computer. If any of you have ideals, let me know.

Now, the next problem! I only have OS 8.0 with netscape 3.0. I'm getting a lot of java plug-in errors when I go to a web site. It seems OK with Google but nearly everything else is showing this problem. What updates do I need for netscape/java? I know I need to update to OS 8.1 but is there an order for the downloads? Do I need one before the other so as not to cause problems and conflicts? I don't want to start doing anything that might mess me up now that I've tried for so long to get it online and finally succeeded.

Give me some pointers here guys and gals.

Thanks...

Connor

Hmm...

I don't know what was wrong with your connection but I have a IIci hooked up to a Linksys router that gets on the web fine. You might not have had the router or the mystic set up properly. As for browsers, there is a 68K version of http://www.icab.de. It seems to run fine.

A friend of mine took my myst

A friend of mine took my mystic and tried to get internet on it at his home with the same results I had before. After I got connected today I ran everything back thru the linksys and I can't get on again. So either the linksys is not set up properly for a macintosh or ? At least I know my mac is configured correctly as I can get on using the older hub. Son num. 1 has misplaced the manual for the linksys and all searches in his living quarters has turned up nil. Maybe some day?

How about the java errors I was getting? Do I need to take care of those before trying to upgrade to OS 8.1?... and I'm saying this in hopes I can find the update some where on the net.

Should I try downloading icab before doing any of this stuff? I'm just gun shy after two years before actually getting online.

Hop in and give me your two cents worth. It just might make an old man's day!

Thanks...

Connor

Hmm...

I don't think 68K macs can use Java. I think that requires at least a powermac.

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=30345, you can download the Mac OS 8.1 update here.

iCab shouldn't give you any problems. You can try it before everything else if you want.

Thanks for the input Hokusai.

Thanks for the input Hokusai.

I'll have to wait til son num. one and son num. two get off of the internet playing their games before I unhook everything and connect with the old hub again. I emailed linksys to see if they have any suggestions as to why I'm not able to connect my mac using their product. I tried reading thru their online manual but couldn't find anything related to my problem.

I remember reading about icab before and I'll probably go with it as my internet browser. Any suggestions on an email program? I dislike email because of all of the spam and so I'd like to set it up so as to delete all email except those that I have addresses for in my address book. I don't chat with people online and rarely receive emails unless I'm trying to find information on something specific.

I'll let you know how everything goes as soon as I can get my Mac back online.

By the way, what's the "blog" thing on our account now? It's been a while since I visited this site and a few things are different. I'm an old timer that's still stuck back when things were a little simplier on computers (about 1989).

Thanks....

Should be possible.

It should be possible to get on through your router. I was on last week with a Mac II with 8mb RAM, OS7.5 and Netscape 2.02. It was more because of the challange than anything.
A thought occurs to me. Might the ethernet cable be the wrong kind? I seem to recall that a few devices will reconfigure for a strait or crossover cable but the majority won't. So might you have a crossover cable that the modem will handle bot the router won't?

Hmm...

Can you access the router through a browser on the mac?

I can't help you on the email program though. I've never needed to use one.

A 'blog' is a type of web journal. With the advent of Applefritter 2, you now have one on here too. I don't really use it and I haven't seen many here use it either.

details would help . . .

OK, we know OS 8 and 575 LB . . . that means you're using Open Transport and the TCP/IP control panel and either an LC-slot or comm-slot-1 NIC. Your router is set up to hand out DHCP addresses, yes?

Mystic set up for DHCP or fixed IP? What subnet does your router use? (eg: IP -> 192.169.1.x + mask -> 255.255.255.0) All have to match between router and clients. Keep in mind that you can assign the Mystic a fixed IP, which might 'fix' the problem if it has trouble getting a DHCP address.

Ethernet card type, make and model? Driver? Swapped ethernet cables and/or router's ports with the other 'working' 'puters?

There is a known problem with

There is a known problem with some 10/100 autosensing hubs/routers with older Macs. The fix is to stick a 10BaseT *only* hub between your Mac and the problem router. The reason it works when hooked dirctly to the broadband is that it is only a 10MBit connection anyway.

Hmmmm,,, that is, uh...

Hey guys, some of these questions are showing my iqnorance. I "did" try hooking the older hub between my mac and router but had no success. I had both the older hub and netgear hub in line that way. Don't know if that had a detrimental effect on trying.

As for the other questions,,, Mystic set up for DHCP, Not sure how to set the subnet (whatever that means). I'm telling you guys, my knowledge of this subject (or should I say 'lack of') has probably been the main pain in not getting online all this time in the first place. Maybe one of you could lead me by the hand and asking exactly what to look for (and where to find it), then after I give you what I find, telling me 'exactly' what to do and where to do it. I think I just have a mental block when it comes to abbreviations and numbers that have no meaning to me. I've always been one of those guys that needed to understand all the little details for everything to fit togather. I know I probably don't need to understand all this if I can just get the right 'thing' in the right place. It would be like someone asking me to explain music theory to someone that just picked up an instrument. So I'll try to do what I would tell someone else in such a circumstance and "just do what I'm told to do" for now. So go ahead and tell me!

Oh, by the way, I'm using Apple's comm. card for the present. I have the ethernet card also but neither of them worked the old way. Mystic is LC 575, 128mb memory, 40mhz, 1 meg video ram, 640X480 screen resolution and OS 8.0. I'm quiet handy with tools and did the MB modification for screen resolution and added the 40mhz crystal for the buss. I dyed it black using the auto car upholster dye after expermenting with several different products. I wrote an article for this forum when I did the color tests but it's probably long gone by now. I've also been able to find a LS-120 super drive that I fit in the computer case with good results. I made a very nice back plate for it and have all the pics I took during the process that I hope to write an article about and get it posted here someday.

Thanks again...

Connor
