The built-in display on the S

The built-in display on the SE only supports black and white. I don't believe there were any color expansion cards for external monitors, either.

No Color QuickDraw

As mentioned above, the lack of Color QuickDraw means that the SE cannot support a colour or greyscale card. However, there were a variety of monochrome cards for big screens up to 1152 x 870 (ie Two Page Display).

SE/30 board swap

The only thing you want to do with a Mac SE FDHD is swap in a SE/30 mobo. This is quite an upgrade. 128MB max RAM, double the clock speed, maybe 3+ times the proc crunching ability, as well as a Processor Direct Slot (PDS). In the PDS you can add a NIC, a processor upgrade (up to the fabled 100MHz PPC 601), and even add a graphics card for a color external monitor (or the legendary greyscale card for the internal display). Some have even done all this and more to one machine. Add a IIfx ROM SIMM for 32-bit clean memory and the ability to upgrade the system to MacOS 8.1, or run A/UX, or a NetBSD webserver (actually, I bet the FDHD will run NetBSD... but how do you get the NIC in there? w/ a SCSI adapter?). Anyway, its a nice upgrade path.

The FDHD won't run NetBSD bec

The FDHD won't run NetBSD because it's a 68000 CPU. It should run an old version of Minix. The SE also does have a 68000 PDS and can take an Ethernet card. It's also got built-in SCSI, so a SCSI-Ethernet would work. Adding a 68020 + MMU card might get it to run NetBSD, but I'm not aware of anyone who has tried it.

again, i wouldnt thnk so, unless you had a special bootloader tht could detect the 68020 pds card, and enable it on startup.
