se 30?

I was at work today , and somebody dropped off an se/30.

Great computer, works perfectly.

Naturally, I take it apart and put in a 2 gig drive and new ram.

Now, the happy mac only comes up for a split second then the disk comes up. This problem remains even when the computer was returned to the original configuration. What do you all think this could be?

The answer is . . .

. . . in the question. Cabling? All secure? Remove the new RAM and try and boot it. Bad ram, Mrs. Torrance, bad ram, is too often the case. If you have done all of that, see if it will boot from a floppy.

I tried all possible combina

I tried all possible combinations of RAM that I could find on hand. As far as I know, everything is put back together properly. I tried it at least 50 different times, with the original ram and hard disk, and everyting. The only thing is, I'm not sure of the ram chip sizes... How do you read the chip sizes on that old ram?
IT is possible that it never made it into one of the known good configurations found on jag's site.

Try only 4 matched sticks. The SE/30 needs RAM in sets of 4, all the same.

I tired the original ram once

I tired the original ram once again, same problem.

Booting off a floppy results in the happy mac, then the disk being ejected about 20 seconds later and the disc icon flashing again.

That floppy

Hey,

This could be one of two things. Have you checked the system on the floppy? If the system folder isn't blessed, it will be ejected. So it's important to know if that's the reason for the ejection. If the system folder is blessed, then you have an interesting problem. If it isn't mismatched RAM or the mobo, that leaves SCSI (but that doesn't explain the floppy ejection).

Wish I could be more help. I would pull all the RAM and the cables, let it sit and start over.

Now it is booting off of a hard drive from my mac classic.
I think it was the PRAM battery that was causing the problem...

booting SE/30 from a floppy

hi,
i have been having the same problem you described with the happy mac and then the floppy being ejected. this started to happen after an upgrade to system 7.0 failed somewhere in the middle of the installation. now it will not boot.

the boot floppy seems to work until it gets ejected seconds after the happy mac face comes up.

how did you get it to finally boot from that floppy?

thanks in advance,
ortencia
