I was thinking of doing the clear iBook mod to my 12" 700MHz. I want to leave the EMI shield off the bottom so you can see the motherboard, will this cause any problems? i would probably leave a small piece on the chip that has the thermal sheet on it. Is there anything else i would have to do to use the iBook without it?
Thanks!
uh... doesn't the iBook use the EMI shield for heat dissipation!
That's what I thought. Thats why I said I'd leave a small square of metal on the chip. The shield can't do TO much for heat, it's way to thin.
The EMI shield is used for heat dissipation in the iBook... do not remove it. It does require that surface area to be able to dissipate the heat generated by the CPU.
Heat dissipation is a function of surface area, not volume. Heat conductance is a function of volume.
The thinness of the EMI shield has little bearing on its function as a heat dissipator.
Peace,
Drew
Hey I made my 12" iBook clear a few months ago and I love it. I removed the EMI shield from the bottom and she still runs just fine. No problems at all.
If you need any tips, let me know.
how can it lead to heat dissapiation?? its not connected to any chips at all (we are talking about the bottom one. and its certainally not connected toght eough to provide any kind of thermal contact.
it *might* however have something to do with airflow, but i don't see that really being an issue either since theres not really an airpath through the case.

i have an ibook that was suffering the gpu problem when i made it clear. i took off the heat shield and used some cards to press the gpu against the bottom casing (they were wedged in between the heat shield and case to start). my gpu ended up frying. the computer doesn't even give me anything on the screen anymore. i wouldn't reccomend it unless you did have some way of cooling the gpu.
Finished the mod. Left the EMI Shield on, just in case. lol
