Whenever I boot from the disk to install Mac OS 10.1, it says "The installer package "Mac OS X" cannot be opened. Missing or old Bill of Materials." Does anyone know what this means, and have any suggestions as to how to fix it? Thanks!

I don't know what the problem was, but whenever I booted off of the CD right now, it is working, and in fact, installing right now! I think that the CD drive may be goofy sometimes.
Now it says that there were errors installing the software, please try installing again! If this thing does not make me scream, I will be surprised!
Are the disks in good condition? Scratches can make that kinda thing happen. Are they burned backup copies?
Wash thine CDs. Get the soap all lathered up on your hands, and wash them from the inner edge to the outer edge, straight out. Dry off by blotting on whatever kinda cloth first, then use the same motion to gently dry both sides, on a VERY soft and non-abrasive cloth. Allow a few minutes for true dryness.
Sproradic badness is probably either dirty discs or a dirty or on-the-way-out drive.

I was using my backup copy, because as usual, I seem to have lost the original one. I also used that Disk Doctor thing, where you spray the disk with the resurfacing fluid, and then crank it, then spray it again, and the crank it again, and it seemed to have took all of the scratches out, but it is a Sony 4X CD-RW, could using a RW disk have been a problem? Should I burn another to a CD-R disk? Thanks! Oh yeah, it is also taking forever to boot from the CD to install, but whenever I hooked up a Lite-On DVD-ROM Drive, it booted up fine, but it would not install, it would get to where it said it was installing, but it never installed. Sometimes this thing drives me NUTS!
Look real hard for that original. I know how that is though! My lab/office looks like I rigged five or six computers to explode, and then just left everything the way it fell...
Sounds like you tried another more recent drive and it liked it a lot better? Then yeah I would definitely try getting an error-free copy with that drive, or the most recent drive you have, and burning it to a CD-R. Depending on what the old drive is, it could be having trouble reading the RW, as that would explain the discrepancy in boot times.
I just gave up for now and put OS 8.1 on it, until I go to the store on Sunday morning, and get some blank CD-R disks.
I had a problem tring to put os x on my g3 B&W and found out that the slightest scratch can raise all kinds of problems, especially on DVD's. Try ordering OSX in CD form off ebay. I think I paid like $60. If all else fails, curse at your computer, then try os 9.2.2
